Title: You would think Derby trainers would eventually figure out...
Post by: derby1592 on May 03, 2003, 09:21:27 PM
...that outside post positions suck.

Personally, I hope they never learn that lesson.

I am guessing that Empire Maker ran the fastest Derby TG fig ever (since 1982) and still lost by almost 2 lengths (and he was even a neck away from finishing completely off the board).

The very wide trip was predictable given the post, the running style and the confident connections that felt they had the best horse (they were probably right) and were likely not going to take any chances of getting into trouble going into the first turn.

Cheers.

Title: 12 Hole
Post by: Tabitha on May 04, 2003, 05:48:10 AM
Its not necessarily a bad hole. However, I didn\'t like it when I analyzed the pace scenario. I figured E.M.inem to get strung from there a bit and he did.

As for E.M.inem being the best horse at 10 marks in a big field, I think thats highly debatable. I\'ll stick with my assertion that despite mojo he lacks the big late move the very best have. I will take Funny Cide down the stretch with E.M.inem at the Classic distances.

E.M.inem was a very bad bet unless you hit him to place and show like Gambino. At 5-2 he paid 5.80 to place and 4.40 to show. But even in hindsight I wouldn\'t make that bet cause I figured E.M.inem to bounce. I made fun of Gambino for doing it, but the payoffs were solid. Truth be told E.M.inem barely passed Peace Rules and was life and death to hold off Atswhatimtalknbout. He almost missed the board. I admire Gambino\'s courage in place and show betting. I have tried it and it doesn\'t work out for me. I don\'t dutch and I consider it dutching on the same horse...lol I want winners. If my horse wins and i bet him to place and show I count all the money I lost by not betting it all to win.
