News flash:
Throat surgery on Scrimshaw, and dental work on Ten Cents A Shine! Both required large blood transfusions? (The larcenous among you may be thinking blood doping, but not I.) I have a sneaking suspicion that the real medical procedure is tattoo altering; you know, the hosses ID number permanently inked into the upper mouth? Is it possible we see Thunder Gulch subbing for Scrimshaw and Devil His Due playing a much younger Ten Cents A Shine? How else could these hosses jump out of their skin every year at this time? All in sarcastic humor, DWL, as I had both Charismatic and Proud Citizen, but this year I find it awfully tough to buy into this neverending charade...
I used to have a horse who couldn\'t beat $10,000 claimers at Tampa Bay, but would ship up to Kentucky in the spring and run very big in allowance company and a slice lower.
My trainer was honest and legal...the big difference was the drug combinations that are legal in Kentucky, but not permitted anywhere else...also, the timing for how drugs can be administered (race day versus training only.)
When Charismatic jumped up in Kentucky I promised my buddies that he would break down in NY, where the restrictions were the toughest. I looked like some kind of genius.
Frankly, I don\'t think that Charismatic, or these other Lucas horses, were blood doped...I don\'t think that it would result in the type of form turnaround that we\'ve seen year after year. But I DO think that there are plenty of legal things that Lucas can do with them...or any other trainer for that matter...which would show up in immediate form reversals.
As for Scrimshaw I don\'t think that it matters. I don\'t think that he\'s fast enough. His Lexington win was nowhere as sharp as the last two Lucas miracles...he really didn\'t beat much and didn\'t get much of a number.
Here\'s my question...is there anything 10¢ a Shine could do strategically race-wise to improve Scrimshaw\'s chances? Could this be why Lukas entered him in the first place?
Somebody else will have to speculate on your question about strategy...I can\'t see anything happening along those lines...but I can comment on why he enters most of the losers that he sends out: EGO
Not necessarily his ego either. For some owners this is the best way to get good Derby tickets. And it keeps Lucas in the game with them another year.
This is not to take away from his winners...they happened too...but only to comment about the ridiculous longshots that had no chance: like Ten Cents.
Enough already with the doping stuff!!!!!
If it is as bad as you say, why do you keep betting?
It appears you would play Poker with someone you knew was cheating.
If you were responding to my post about Lucas, read it more closely...I was not referring to doping. I was speculating that the drugs and approach to drugging that is LEGAL in Kentucky is enough to turn around a horse\'s form.
If you wonder why someone might keep betting while suspicious of illegal drugging, it\'s simple...you just follow the bouncing ball. If a suspicious trainer is winning 30% and plus, you bet with him.
Anyway....
\"...is there anything 10¢ a Shine could do strategically race-wise to improve Scrimshaw\'s chances?\"
If he runs clockwise he might be able to catch the front runners and throw some blocks for Scrimshaw.
I\'ve wanted to say the same thing for a while now. Well said!
Are there some folks out there actually spending money on TG sheets, DRF, programs etc. then spends hours handicapping a days worth of races only to ulitmately say I\'m going to wager on this horse today because I believe the connections are using illegal drugs? That\'s just plain silly. We just don\'t know so why even consider an unknown such as who may be doping their horses when handicapping?
I also think it was a downright shame what people did to Mike Gill.
Phil
You\'ve got to be kidding.
Proud Citizen went from a 4 1/4 to a 1/2 --
a 3 3/4 point jump -- and finished second.
Who\'s to say Scrimshaw doesn\'t jump from a
2 3/4 to a negative # and win the whole thing?
Interesting: According to this article, Mike Gill was cleared in the missing leg escapade at Gulfstream, is suing Delaware Park for barring him (and Gulfstream), and will be getting out of racing in 2 years.
