Title: Distance Specific Jockey Statistics?
Post by: sekrah on December 05, 2009, 08:06:56 AM
Jerry,

Any chance of there being distance specific jockey statistics included in Thorograph stats?

A jockey who wins 17% of his 6 furlong races could very easily struggle at judging his moves at 6.5 furlong races.  Same for a jockey who might be good at 1 1/8th, may not be quite as good at 1 mile. Labelling them as sprints and routes seems pretty broad to me.

That still wouldn\'t answer the important questions about a jockey.

what would the jockeys percentage matter if he didnt have a competitive horse to even run in a particular race?

If you are handicapping a 6.5 furlong race and you have two horses about even, Both jockeys win at 20% but one jockey wins 6.5 furlong races at 27% and the other wins them at 8%, you don\'t think that would be useful information to have?

I seriously hope you aren\'t handicapping 6.5 furlong races exactly as you would 6 furlong races.

Sekrah:

If you think this information is advantageous, why would you want TG to
compile it for the general public? Why wouldn\'t you keep the statistics
yourself (and keep your findings to yourself).

The most interesting non traditional jockey statistic I have heard of being
kept measured jockeys\' sucess rate in races which were decided by a neck
or less.

well generally if thats the case, i would take the faster horse unless the odds were too low. chances are in that situation the public is going to put more money on the better percentage jockey but my opinion wouldnt change with the faster horse unless i got the odds i was looking for to pick the other horse

Sometimes in those equibase leading jockey/trainer charts they break wins down by sprint, route, 3yo, 2yo, class, etc.
I\'ve done no empiracal study, but when you have a jock that\'s in the top 10 after a few dozen mounts, and is 4 for 30 with sprints, but 0 for 19 with routes, I\'ve had success using it as a determiner to trim down my p3\'s and p4\'s.  He may still be getting itm, but some guys just fall in a rut where they\'re not timing rides quite right at a particuluar track because of a bias change, or they\'ve hooked up w a trainer that has a preponderance of one type of horse or another ready for a particular type of race, etc.  Lot\'s of ways to rationalize using such short term statistics, but if a leading jock is even money in a route race and he\'s 0/20 at the distance, I get a bit braver using other longer price horses on my tickets if the sheets have them reasonably competitive.
