Title: Sal the Barber UNDERLAY OF THE MEET
Post by: Niall on August 18, 2009, 07:28:42 AM
Is it possible that the talking heads on NYRA or OTB can use their pulpits to perhaps influence the position they are taking? In one such instance regarding the above entitled I believe that happened .... Any thoughts ? Should I just not pay attention ... Has anyone ever been talked off a horse ?? I wasnt this time but came close ...

Niall,

He did not run like the underlay of the meet. As far as the talking heads/touts, no one \"moves\' the board at a meet like Saratoga.

No he didnt ... but have run into little Andy down at Belmont and have seen him trying to get home horses other than the ones he just touted ... Just dont understand how emphatic he was against this horse is all ... so I wonder. However your point about moving the board is well taken. Thanks

This is completely false and an extremely unfair allegation....to be kind. I NEVER bet on horses that I claim I do not like. NEVER. I may sometimes say that I don\'t particularly like a horse\'s chances, and/or think it is an underlay, but still use it as one of a few in a multi race play, but in that case I always say something like \" while I think it can win I don\'t particularly like its chances. \" This is betting strategy as opposed to strict opinions. However, when I knock a horse\'s chances like Sal the Barber, whether right or wrong, I NEVER bet on them.

I do not try \" to get home horses other than the ones \" I have \" touted. \" I bet the horses I say I am betting on and not on ones I say I am betting against. Now, I may bet horses that aren\'t my first selection, as price obviously dictates how one plays, but I am also clear about this on the show. For instance, I played the 26:1 winner of Friday\'s 1st, even though I picked it 3rd, but also said both during the pre-race prattle and on Twitter, that I was betting this horse. Does this sound like someone that a few races later declares he hates a horse and then bets it? What, I gave thousands of people a 26:1 shot but later tried to stear them away from a 5:1 shot? Give me a break.

Love me, hate me, ignore me, whatever....but spare me the allegations of dishonesty and deception. I have no doubt the proprietor of this site will vouch for my integrity. I may be the worst handicapper in the history of the game but I share my honest opinions no matter how bad they may be.

Rather unfair to tarnish someone\'s reputation with an unfounded allegation isn\'t it Niall? The day you allege you saw Andy \"cheering home other horses\" at Belmont - did you see his tickets? Andy never makes a secret of the fact that he bets, and I have been at Siro\'s when he has given out a tip on a first time starter he got from a trainer at the seminar.I remember Harvey said \"Well Andy you will never get a tip again\". The response was \"If I\'m doing the show - I have to give it out\".

Keep up the good work Andy - I have always loved your enthusiasm and passion for the game.

I am pretty certain that I did not suggest that Andy wagered on horses that he publicly stated he did not like. To be clear, because as lukiladi suggests that could possibly tarnish someone\'s well earned good reputation, that is not what I meant although I can see how it may be interpreted that way. So I apologize. To be honest I value his opinion and have learned much about when NOT to include a horse as much as who to include. The emphasism was what struck me ... Just as it does when Andy says Run, dont walk, to the windows if such and such is at this price ... Andy, thanks for your insight ....

The only thing I will add to this conversation is that the idea is ridiculous if only because Andy would rather everyone knew he liked the winner than have the money.

I\'m pretty certain you wrote he was trying to get horses home OTHER THAN THE ONES HE TOUTED. No class Niall, and a liar to boot.

Agree with JB that Littleandy would like to give out a winner as well as cash, by far Andy is better that any of the clowns on TVG or HRTV.

In my opinion there is a big difference in saying that he wagered on a horse he publicly said he DID NOT LIKE and wagering on a horse he did not tout ... Andy clarified his position, I said I understood and apologized ... Thinking back is it possible he said he did not like the horse at whatever odds with 15 min to post but really liked him at whatever odds + 5 at post ?? Because it is all about the price. Perhaps I was \"miffed\" that he didnt agree with my selection at the time ... I did post before the race about the pattern ... there were no replies ... Does anyone remember Sal\'s sheet and would pls comment on it ? The loose on the lead race prior was an abberation given his previous races and it was a slight reaction yet won handily ... Just trying to get better at this is all ...

I will definitely agree with that, also he is better than the NYRA and NYCOTB analysts..

I agree that Andy is one of the better hc, but recently a friend of mine was behind him at the window, and he was punching out a number he did not tout on the show?????......maybe on the way he got a tip!

I have to stand up a bit for Matt Carothers on TVG, who is the one analyst I would not classify as a clown.  And although I have not had luck with Little Andy\'s selections in the past, he is diligent and well meaning.  Let\'s face it, handicapping as many races as these public figures are required is an impossible task.

Bill,

You must know that there are many people sitting somewhere with far more handicapping prowess than most of the TV analysts.

The idea for all of these guys,on the handle side, should be one thing, to increase churn for their employers. They do a poor job at that, imo

My comment is that whatever you saw with that horse you were right, he ran a new top. Whether I would have taken that price on him against faster horses is a different story.

Andy is good because he is a) contrarian, b) opinionated, and c) odds-conscious. He also has a pretty good opinion for a non-TG player.

But I do miss Jan. I have my own opinions, she sometimes gave useful information, which is a valuable commodity.

This comes from one with no skin in the game, but a thread about a fairly
unimportant horse (named after a baseball player most of you guys would
lead me to believe you are too young to be familiar with) and a knowledgeable and
affable handicapper who \"made his bones\" by occasionally donning a dunce cap is
generating a lot of heat.

Sheesh.
