In the considerable shadow of this white eyed giantess is I believe an even
greater story.
Canadian 2YO champion, Derby winner, game second in the Preakness on a track
which very few thought he would like.
Between TVG and NBC, they showed that overhead shot of the Derby numerous times;
that was an impressive burst of acceleration, and not enough people have
commented on the equine courage it takes to navigate a narrow opening.
If racing is lucky RA stays sound and competes as a 4YO, and MTB, a gelding, is
around for considerably longer, his slingshot aimed at larger, more regally
bred rivals.
tough to see her running much beyond 2 or 3 more races. I just hope she didnt get hurt yesterday...her gallop was a bit weird too. Anyway her blood is way to valuable to have her run as a 4 year old. Just dominate the Alabama and then there will be decisions to make. It will be an intersting breeding decision when it comes to that too but you gotta believe AP INDY will be near or on the top of the list.

First ever four generations male-tail of American classic winners. Some day we will figure out that regal breeding should be proven on the race track not the sales ring.
Yes you are correct, Analize.
I\'ve never been quite so good with my \"in tail males\" and \"in tail females\"
(maybe it goes back to problems I had with the fruit flies in biology class)
but even a pedigree neophyte such as myself can see that four generations back
the big names are all present, including Northern Dancer twice.
Speaking of Northern Dancer, I expect that everyone will have read \"The
Kingmaker: How Northern Dancer Founded A Racing Dynasty\", by Avalyn Hunter,
by the time Saratoga opens.
Northern Dancer sired 645 registered foals, 147 of whom became stakes winners...
Speaking of Saratoga, there was a passage in \"Kingmaker\" which brought
goosebumps to this New York bred:
\"Even some of Northern Dancer\'s least likely sons have had their moments of
brilliance. Among them was Compliance, a 1978 colt out of Sex Appeal, and, thus,
a full brother to champions El Gran Senor and Try My Best. He proved virtually
useless as a racehorse, failing to win in three starts, although he did run
third in a small stakes in Ireland. His form may well have been compromised by
a nasty temperament, which probably would have made him a gelding had he been a
son of any horse but Northern Dancer.
Given a chance at stud in New York, Compliance highlighted his stud career by
siring two remarkable full brothers out of the Bold Arian mare Broadway Joan:
Fourstardave, the beloved \"Sultan of Saratoga\" who won races at the Old Spa for
eight consecutive seasons, and Fourstars Allstar, who became the first American
based horse to win a European Classic when he captured the 1991 Irish Two
Thousand Guineas.\"
MTB still getting no respect.
Wide Right Mikey is taking off him to stay at Hollywood to ride Madeo in the Whittingham on Belmont Day.
Who gets the ride now?

Ron Anderson is dialing the telephone as we speak-- unless he\'s going back on Dunkirk...
As a (still) relative newcomer to the sport of racing, the overhead replay on the NBC broadcast gave me goosebumps. And I wasn\'t watching RA, I was watching MTB go from dead last again and weave his way through traffic to close awfully fast on RA. Richie, I agree- MTB\'s performance seems to be lost in the shuffle. In my mind, it was a spectacular run. I believe JB stated a month or so ago that MTB\'s pattern fit the kind of horse who could go the distance in the triple crown. I personally think he would have nipped her if he had\'t had to slam on the brakes to avoid a fading POTN and then cut back outside. It sure was fun to watch.

Thank God.
He just did that horse a favor.

Have some more Kool-Aid.
You need to get in the real world. Mike had already committed to ride Madeo for the Moss\'s and John Shirreffs before the Preakness. You think Mike is gonna renege on his best clients? Giacomo, Tiago, Zenyatta, etc?
Frankly, why should Mike have any loyalty to re-ride MTB when he was just a replacement rider because Calvin jumped off?
Its fine to be a jerk and bash Mike for his rides, just don\'t play horses that he rides. By the way, how many races you won in your racing career?
I respect P Dub for backing Mike Smith as a Hall of Fame jockey. I\'m friends with Mike and it gets a little old reading what some of you know nothings are constantly ragging about Smith. Again, if you don\'t like the way he rides, then play against his horses all the time.
Smith, Albarado, Chavez everyone develops some prejudice from time to time but the truth is they all win thier share of races. Basically if they are on the right horse they will win. True we are human and make mistakes but it isn\'t continuous. Also trainers sometimes know details about thier horses that isn\'t published in the form or reflected on the TG. Example Belmont\'s 9th race Sun 5/17 Fairway Drive.
Ironic in that Ron was responsible for Borel originally getting the ride on MTB 2 days prior to the derby draw.
The field had 13 of the best riders in the world going a mile and 3/16ths. Six of them slammed on the brakes and two more bumped. How can you and P-Dub keep defending this kind of crap?

How does this relate to Smith??
I agree with P-Dub here.
From the overhead view, MTB\'s wide trip problems seemed to result from Pioneer of Denial stopping in front of him like the Gucci watch I purchased for my wife on Canal St., which forced Mike Smith\'s hand.
Spa - horses are living animals. If horses worked as predictably as sports cars everyone here could get on one and ride it.
ALMOST everyone here, Sight.
Golf carts, that\'s another story.
I\'ll challenge anyone to horses or golf carts - bring it on
Seriously, I hold my breath every year at the jam ups in the Derby and Preakness. Precisely because these riders are the best in the world, crashes and clips are rare.
I was just funning with our host, who has 11,000 cars, all of them yellow.
But you are right. What\'s amazing each year is how few jocks are hurt or killed, rather than how many.

Like the Gucci watch line. Funny.
He\'s not perfect, but your analysis is correct. POTN stopped and altered his path. He didn\'t have a lot of options from there. At last, somebody with an objective opinion.
