Big Derby Ticket at Churchill
By Bill Finley
According to the Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers, a Churchill Downs on-track bettor won more than $1 million on the Kentucky Derby by hitting a $1,000 exacta bet. An exacta requires the bettor to pick the top two finishers in exact order.
The bettor made a $1,000 exacta box consisting of three horses, using used Mine That Bird, second-place finisher Pioneerof the Nile and an unidentified third horse. The bet cost $6,000 total.
The winning exacta combination of Mine That Bird and Pioneerof the Nile paid $2.074/80 for a $2 ticket. For the $1,000 wager, the bettor, who asked that Churchill not release his or her identity, collected $1,037,400.
