Title: Preakness
Post by: jimbo66 on May 06, 2009, 09:21:30 AM
Never too early to start thinking again.

Looking at the figures put up last night, it is going to be hard to like a Derby starter in the preakness.  (although it seems like \"new shooters\" rarely win, Bernardini excepted)

Mine that Bird - Been discussed at length already, but the bottom line is that he is coming back on 2 weeks rest after a 6+ point new top.  Still figures to be a decent price and he will now be \"fast enough\" to win, but with that jump up, hard to like him.

Pioneer of the Nile - IMO, he is the Preakness favorite.  However, with the wide trip he got in the DErby, he ran a 3 point new top in the race.  Now he fits under TGJB\'s \"synthetic to dirt move up\'s that don\'t fire big again theory\".  Not sure I buy the theory, but as the 2-1 favorite, or thereabouts, I probably buy the theory for the purposes of the Preakness.  Plus, I have concerns about how this horse went from seemingly have a ton of horse on the far turn, to immediately empty in the stretch.  I would have taken 8-5 on this horse on the far turn, yet he barely held 2nd, and IMO could have been dq\'ed for drifting out in the stretch.

Musket Man - Ran a decent race in the derby, but for those sheets traditionalists, he now sits on \"0-2\" and the \"x\" seems like it might be coming....

Papa Clem - Another who ran a decent race in the Derby.  On a side note, I am not sure TG got the ground loss right on this guy.  I watched several replays and he swumg out wider than POTN halfway through the 2nd turn IMO, and yet he got a 1w from your ground loss guy.  Suggest you at least take one more look.  However, this is another one that now sits on \"0-2\" and the \"x\" on two weeks rest would seem to be the best bet.

I guess of the Derby runners, you could make a case for General Quarters, if he goes in the Preakness, as he seems to be alternating efforts and with the bad race in the Derby, he could run back to form in the Preakness.  Also figures to be a decent price.  Definitely usable.

Other than that, let\'s see those new shooters!!

I really think Big Drama has a good shot in the race. He\'s shown speed, he\'s rated off the pace, and he finishes.

Hull is kind of a wild card underneath. He was all over the stretch in the Derby Prep. Hopefully he\'s improving.

We have Papa Clem as 1-wide on turn one and 2-wide on turn two. He was outside Hold Me Back on turn two and inside Pioneerof The Nile and Desert Party both of whom we have wider on turn two.

We corrected the sheet for Rachel Alexandra. She earned that negative denotation.
