Title: Rain question
Post by: Lost Cause on April 30, 2009, 02:05:00 PM
Since it looks like there will be rain tomorrow I got a question.  Hopefully somebody knows about it...

If a race is taken off the turf onto a sloppy track does that hurt turf horses as much as if they were run on a fast track.  In other words is a sloppy track more like turf than a fast track.

and vice versa..

If a race is run on a wet turf do dirt horses handle it better than if they were to run on the firm turf.

Thanks

I believe turf horses are generally larger horses with a running style where they like to push hard off the firm ground.  Planting and pushing doesn\'t fair well on sloppy tracks and thats why we see so many scratches when races are taken off the turf.  Lighter, more agile horses with quicker leg action prefer slop.
