Title: Dunkirk
Post by: covelj70 on April 29, 2009, 02:29:41 PM
Today was the first time I have seen Dunkirk in person and I must say, he\'s not that impressive of an individual.

Doesn\'t mean he can\'t eventually be a great horse but for the last several years, the Derby winners have been spectacularly put together which is one of the keys to get through a 20 horse scrum.

This guy doesn\'t carry alot of weight and I think that could be a big obstacle to overcome, especially given that he\'s going to be coming from the back.  He\'s likely to get bounced around quite a bit and whereas some horses are big and strong enough to make their own trip, others aren\'t.  He\'s is likely in that \"aren\'t\' category.

I wasn\'t inclined to use him anyway given the no foundation and the fact that he will have to circle the field and nothing I saw in person today changes my mind about that view.

Cov - You must be on sight. How does Chocolate Candy look in person? As good as in all the photos I\'ve seen?

I\'m not sure that Dunkirk will be my top pick but I think a smallish nimble horse that can accelerate quickly to a small short lasting hole would have an advantage in a race like the Derby, and Dunkirk has shown that ability.

Hey Buck,

yeap, I am here.  Chocolate Candy looks good physically, his coat is very good and he\'s holding his weight well.

However, he isn\'t the best mover on the dirt down here, that\'s for sure.

I didn\'t see him on the west coast at all so I don\'t know if that\'s how he usually goes or if he isn\'t taking to the dirt that well.  His breeze was fast which is good but others such as West Side Bernie, Desert Party, Regal Ransom and I Want Revenge are all getting over the track better than Choc Candy, at least to my eye.
