Title: What an ugly Oaks
Post by: jimbo66 on April 28, 2009, 02:32:23 PM
Boy, this has to be the least compelling Oaks in years, at least from a gambling perspective.  Granted, from a horse racing fan perspective, it will be interesting to see Rachel Alexandra run, but there is no competition in the race except for 1 filly.

Not a single grade 1 stakes winner in the field (Rachel is not one herself)

Only two graded stakes winners of any kind.  (Rachel and Justwhistledixie are G2 winners.

Rachel will be 2-5 and Justwhistledixis 5-2.  (yep Covelj, I believe you got that right about 2 weeks ago, and Michael D and I both questioned it).

Not great.  The rest of the Oaks day card looks interesting, if not compelling.  Have to wait for the TG boys to put the numbers up to see what kind of gambling opportunities there will be.  Count me in for betting against Zenyatta on the dirt.  Would like to see Barry run his filly here.  Not many chances to beat an undefeated champion filly, while you can breed to AP Indy all the time :)

I wanted to try and take a stand against RA and probably still will try to do something small with the Mott horse and the ones I like in the Derby but after seeing how RA has trained this week, I am not feeling too bold about taking a big stand against here.

Jim, I haven\'t had a view on the Oaks prices. I was expecting a dud, and that\'s exactly what we got. Great looking card though.

Nice Derby analysis covel. I\'ll be sure to add a view or two.

Michael,

I stand corrected. IT was \"ejxd2\", not \"michael d\" on that \"rachel alexandra won\'t be 2-5 post.

Anyway, I think she will be, and she will be tough to beat.  I will probably take the 5-2 on Justwhistledixie, because I like the fact she hasn\'t gone backwards and is only 1 point slower than RA coming in, but it is hard to say how fast RA could have run this year if allowed to, she was hard held in the stretch of all three races.

Yeah, I definitely got that one wrong. I should know better than to trust the future pools to tell me anything.

She\'s a bet against for me at odds on, but it may be more a no bet than bet someone else. We\'ll see what else looks good in the pick four, I guess.
