Title: Summer Colony
Post by: nunzio on February 12, 2002, 05:36:10 AM
Did anyone catch Summer Colony at SA this weekend.  Mcannally (sp?) was the only other horse proven at the distance of 1 1/8.  I\'d
seen Summer colony run in NY and I knew she\'d
fire.  The only doubt I had was that she was training at GP and than shipped to California.  If she\'d of shown just one work over the SA surface, I\'d of increased my bet by 50%.  I guess it didn\'t matter much in hindsight.

This has been one of the best jobs of spotting a horse in the right races that I think I have ever seen. Summer Colony has looked good since that dynamite Maiden win, but Hennig has been an absolute master at finding the perfect spots to run her. I\'ve been impressed by his handling.

Normally I would not answer something like this, but 3 days ago I used this filly as an example of horrible management. To have a distance 3yo filly running 3\'s and only winning allowance races borders on malpractice. Going into December she had run four 3\'s, and earned $140K, with no black type. Whoopee!

I didn\'t see your earlier post so I wasn\'t directing mine at anything you said. And your point is a good one. But I still like the job that Hennig has done with her. He has put together a winning streak of 6 races with her. Has the black type. I don\'t know what the value of this filly is right now but it must be substantial. That might be more important that the purse money she\'s won. And he doesn\'t seem to have worn her out in the process. Maybe I am just sensitive to this subject of horse management after watching some of the moves that Baffert has been making lately (running Officer back on 7 days rest, running Puerto Banus back on 9). I guess we\'ll never know if Hennig could have gotten even more than he has out of Summer Colony. But if I owned this filly, I think I would feel pretty good right now.TGJB wrote:
