Title: Bomb for Underneath Plays
Post by: albany on May 26, 2008, 07:18:16 AM
Has anyone considered Tomcito as a bomb for underneath plays?

He is the only horse who has actually won a race at 1 1/2 miles. This is a significant factor for me.

Tomcito was well-bet, but ran poorly in the Peter Pan. His poor performance may have been caused by a displaced soft palate. This problem has been addressed by a  post-Peter Pan myectomy.

Any thoughts?

I\'ve wanted to see this horse run well from the Florida Derby.  But he has shown almost nothing.  Passed tired horse there, and as you say poor in the PP.  Has had excuses (fever, palate) - but I\'m thinking I just bought into the hype.  Trainer might be out of his depth as well.

Maybe the bottom of a super - passing tired horses again.

Albany,

Not a bad thought given that the \"default\" underneath horses are common(DOC and TOE), why not Tomicito off the operation. This race is a poor play by itself, short field, lots of question marks on several runners, the distance.

If you are tossing BB and/or Casino Drive, in the win position or entirely, and cash, you have a nice score.

Agree on the trainer part-that guy might be clueless.

Had a surface excuse at Keeneland then displaced at Belmont.He\'d have to be doing awfully well these next two weeks to get any of my money. If I\'m looking for a bomb-I\'d rather use the Motion horse from the Preakness Icabad Crane who is just as fast as Tomcito on paper.

You would want to see Tomcito display some sustained speed in a workout to tell if the myectomy did him any good....from 5 to 7 furlongs...anything shorter won\'t mean much and anything longer would be punishing for the horse.

I agree.

To make a meaningful bet, I\'d like to see 5f in 1:00 with a gallop out under 1:13.

I saw Tomcito up close in the Keeneland paddock prior to the Lexington Stakes. He\'s as tall a horse as you\'ll ever see, something like 17.2 hands. I thought to myself that day that his long stride might make the longer distances a bit easier but now I don\'t see him as much more than a slow plodder. He could hit the bottom of the  super/tri but I think several would have to pack it in early for that to happen. He will be a bomb and deservedly so.
Good luck to all!
