Title: The Very One
Post by: Josephus on March 09, 2008, 12:52:58 PM
The race was listed in the entries at 1 3/8, also in the DRF and the simo cast book at 1 3/8.  I bet the race figuring the distance, and then they run it at 1 1/8.  What gives?  Anybody know?

Distance change for The Very One
By MIKE WELSCH
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The distance of Saturday\'s $100,000 The Very One Handicap at Gulfstream Park has been changed from 1 3/8 miles to 1 1/8 miles due to heavy rains which struck the area earlier Saturday morning. According to track officials, the switch was made to prevent the race from starting on the backstretch and thus having the horses passing over the same spot on the yielding course twice during the running of the race.

\"Shortening the distance of the race was the only way we felt we could safely keep The Very One on the yielding turf course,\" explained racing operatons manager Bernie Hettel.
