Title: Waldrop to testify

Maybe you could propose some high profile vets and trainers to be called before the hearings and some questions that could be asked. You could ask the questions as an expert and the vets and trainers would be under the threat of perjury before Congress.

National Thoroughbred Racing Association president and chief executive officer Alex Waldrop has been asked to testify in Washington, D.C., during a hearing titled "Drugs in Sports: Compromising the Health of Athletes and Undermining the Integrity of Competition."

The congressional Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection has scheduled the hearing for Feb. 27.

Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell released a report Dec. 13, 2007, chronicling steroid use among Major League Baseball players. The Feb. 27 hearing will explore Mitchell's findings, as well as the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs among professional, college, and high school athletes of all sports.

Waldrop and other NTRA officials in January said there was a chance horseracing representatives could be called to testify. The industry is currently working to regulate use of anabolic steroids in horses through a model rule several states already have adopted.

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, which devised the model rule along with the Association of Racing Commissioners International, said it would like the rule adopted around the country by the end of this year.

"The model rule has got to be put in place, because Congress is watching," Waldrop said in late January.

NTRA, RMTC, and RCI officials met with legislative staff on Capitol Hill Jan. 8 to outline steps the horseracing industry is taking to regulate medication, including steroids approved by the Federal Drug Administration.

On Feb. 13, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform heard testimony from high-profile MLB pitcher Roger Clemens and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, on whether Clemens used steroids.
