Title: Breeders' Cup Roll Call..Who's going??
Post by: P-Dub on October 19, 2007, 03:57:43 AM
Flying out next Thursday morning from the West Coast (SFO). Thought it would be cool to meet some of you. It will be my first trip to an East Coast track and looking forward to it. Staying at the Hilton in AC.  Any pointers??

Me and my wife are driving down from Saratoga County Thursday. Staying at the Crystal Inn in Eatontown. My only pointer is to pack clothes for any kind of weather, including rain gear, especially if you have seats on the apron like we do. Someone pick a time and a location and I\'ll be there.

A few suggestions (coming from someone who traveled from Staten Island to MP 47 times in one year prior to my moving to Long Island!)

MP is approx. 65 miles from AC (AC Exp.- straight up the GSP, exit 105). Depending on BC traffic however, it could take you 60-90 minutes to go the last 5 miles on Rt. 36 from exit 105 get to the track (there is only one main road (rt.36) into the track from the GSP).  Either leave early or try this alternate route... take exit 98 on the GSP to Rt. 33 east to Rt. 71 north (Norwood Ave.). Stay on Norwood Ave.(it becomes rt. 25 n) to rt. 537. Make a left on Rt. 537.

The track will be 1/4 mile on the right. This route brings you both south and east of the track avoiding ALL of the main traffic. It may sound complicated...it isn\'t...shouldn\'t be more that 20-25 minutes after you get off the GSP. Look at Google map\'s...Hope this helps.

I\'ll be there Tuesday-Sunday morning. Hopefully I can remain disciplined enough to layoff bad bets so I can unload on Dylan Thomas.

Would like to add some Driving Advice from another Staten Islander, one who has
invaded Monmouth Park from the North for the last 25 years or so-- if you are
traveling south on the GSP, fuggedabout getting off at exit 105 and getting
on Rte 36, which is a nightmare on an average weekday when there is racing.

Get off at exit 109, make a left on Newman Springs Road (Rte 520). Follow 520
(if you keep your eyes peeled, you may see a small luncheonette called Edies
(its next to a cemetery) which makes as good an omelette as you would want to
eat). Continue on 520, make a right on Seven Bridges Road, follow Seven Bridges
Road for 5 or so miles; it ends at the northern border of Monmouth Park.

Kind of a roundabout route, but you will miss most traffic, see some beautiful
homes and I recommend the cream cheese omelette.

If you are looking to keep your cholesterol down, take a right onto Shrewsbury
Ave off 520, then make a left on Sycamore Ave. Hang a right at the Little
Silver Train station and follow the road which will take you through Fort
Monmouth, past a small public marina, past the now closed Old Wharf Inn; the
northern edge of Monmouth is about 5 furlongs from the Old Wharf,

Either of these back door routes will keep you away from Rte 36, which as
Trackjohn says, is to be avoided at all costs.

Perhaps the \'07 BC will restore some of the luster lost in N.J. ( and tri state area ) from when Greasy Tony\'s in New Brunswick closed a few years back -  they weren\'t too bad , they\'d only poison me about half the time . In the turf IMO DT + EC can be beat ...

I\'ll be there on Friday, weather permitting.  Not Sat. because I don\'t like crowds all that much.  I usually spend the time between races out by the walking ring.  So, if I see anybody there who looks like they don\'t know what there doing, I\'ll assume it\'s one of you guys.

Someone once called Mth, \"a little jewel of a racetrack\".  Well, it\'s not so little, unless you compare it to Bel, but it certainly is a jewel.  Here\'s hoping the weather holds and none of the horses \"spoil like strawberries\" (C. Whittingham) over the intervening few days.

I\'ll be working Monmouth on Wed and then will lead The All-Star Buglers in our 7th appearance at the BC on both Fri and Sat.

Traffic on Rt 36 is supposed to be routed as such (still awaiting an official):

BOTH sides (EB and WB) will be one way streets. All traffic will be headed towards the track before the races and all traffic will be directed away from the track after the races.

Pletcher should win the classic with either Lawyer Ron or Any Given Saturday. I say this because in my years working at MP, I have always had great handicapping success - until this year where I was virtually blanked. I think the new surface is to blame (could also be many other factors LOL) and so I am going with the \"horse for course angle\". (Kinda wish the BC was at the Meadowlands this year where I have had an unusually successful meet). I\'ve also been notoriously unsuccesful handicapping the BC in years past, so this year I\'m due. It helps that I\'ve been \"on a roll\" of late, scoring with Forty Crowns (13-1) at the Maryland Million, and then again with Carnival Chrome (huge overlay at 3-1) in the West Virginia Breeders Classic. I think I\'ll get a square price on AGS and LR. Have yet to handicap the rest of the card, but English Channel is another \"horse for course\".

Good luck and safe trips to all!

Scratch the new traffic pattern. Normal routing can be expected.

Richiebee,

Just a quick note of thanks for the outstanding directions. In and out on this route without so much as a moment of stopped traffic. Tried to stop at Edie\'s for a quick bite early, but it was standing room only at about 9:30.

Thanks again for the post, while it wasn\'t a madhouse this made life easier.

...just doesn\'t have the same ring to it.

In the mid 90s there was a tall older man who used to walk around the
grandstand in a raincoat and a white baseball cap. He would repeatedly shake
his head and mumble to himself \"Cauthen, yer killin me.\"
