Today at a noon press conference James Tafel and Carl Nafzger are expected to announce the entry to the Alabama Stakes of two year old champion and Kentucky Derby winning Street Sense. The late addition to the Alabama sets up a confrontation between Kentucky Derby and Belmont winners, two horses widely believed to be the two best three year olds in training.
Nafzger stated \"James and I have agreed to accept an additional five pounds in weight in order to run. We don\'t like to give weight to a nice colt like Rags to Riches but our horse is tearing the barn down and needs a race.
Tafel added \"If Rags to Riches ducks us in the Alabama, thats not the type of courage Championships are made from.\"
Daily Racing Form contacted James Talafon, a Saratoga Steward, to clarify the status of the Alabama Stakes and Mr. Talafon stated it is a restricted race. When DRF informed Tafel and Nafzger of the Alabama\'s restricted race status, Nafzger retorted: \"What, you don\'t think we\'re wussie enough? \"
Added Tafel, \"I\'m old and from a time when parents dressed all their kids in girl\'s clothing. Hell I\'ve got pictures of me as a toddler in curls and a dress.\"
Nafzger walking hand in hand with the flowing robes dressed Sheikh Mohammed was overheard in departing to say, \"If Rags to Riches has any balls she won\'t withdraw from the Alabama.\"
