Not much said about the powers that be have decided to give a free pass to winners of certain grade 1\'s.
This could be the start of something grand.

The CUP people announced last week that certain races will guarantee the connections an entry into the the related category come champion day.
This will greatly inhance the stature of grade 1\"s.
Now if only this model could be expanded to the broader scope of racing,we\'d have higher purses, less racing dates and greater interest and participation.
Quarters have their heats, poker its\' sattilite tourneys and all telivised sports have their playoffs.
Claimers would vie for placement in alw. races;alw. horses would compete for stake races..etc.
theses purses will be inflated in part due to slots.
But the key to something being done on a grand scale will arrive when the gambling dollar is stretched to the point that casinos won\'t carry the tracks anymore and a profit would need to be forthcoming.
Casinos will reduce the their meets in length, and days of operation during the week.
Territorial horses competing for various categories could and would go over on the tube.
DRUGS?--strict and swift penalties would be imposed by casinos on any party that attempts to do CHICANERY...who knows better how to police this problem?
Calder does an exemplary job with various SPECIAL days, and the Cal/fla race day increases the purse and modest bragging rights.
There is no ending to this contemplation...except to say...don\'t mind me cause I ain\'t nuthin but a dream....  rh 1972

Agreed that making Grade 1 stake races significant in terms of BC \"seeding\" may
have the effect of increasing field size and bettor interest in these races.

I thought it was a good idea by MLB to tie home field advantage in the World
Series to the result of the All- Star Game; at least now the All Star game is
not totally meaningless.

Also agreed that we need less racing but more quality racing. The problem is that
the current foal crop is probably about 35,000 foals per year. Reducing the
number of racing days without reducing the foal crop could have potentially
tragic implications.

Will the foal crop be reduced? I do not foresee the Federal government paying
subsidies to breeders NOT to breed horses. Since the commercial breeders and
pinhookers seem to be the ones making the real money in the game right now, I do
not see them voluntarily cutting back stallions\' workloads.

Personally it is a bad idea. With one win and in mentality, most trainers will do just that! Why race the horse and knock him out during preps. When all you have to do is rest him for the BC. Why run hard in the Woodward, when you have sewn-up your spot in the Whitney? They would have been better off to make them win at least one event, and then maybe hit the board in two others to keep them racing, unstead of having one hit wonders.

One hit wonders could encourage more race fixing.
