Eyes red from the Red Eye and little sleep, I\'m back. There\'s obviously a lot to talk about (like Eric suddenly showing a great interest in improving the figure study after I made several requests to them for suggestions before it began), I\'ll comment on that and the contest later when I wake up and get a little caught up.
Good to see that you are back. A friend of mine called me last night to tell me the news. When I left TVG I guess you were sweating out the Inquiry in the Crosby. From previous reports I knew you were in a least second.
My comments to him were, \"Hopefully he is leaving town soon because the way plays he might be trying to get it all back tommorow in the last race Super at Saratoga.\"
lol......congrats again.
JB,
Congrats, I know some of the top finishers are tough contest players. If you have time please post the rules and your winners.
Mike
SC and Ian (Caltech on the Rag board)-- Don\'t know why people think I hit the stake, it was about the only race on the card I did not hit. Starting with the last two Saturday I showed a profit on 8 of 9 straight races, with 4 signers. And it could have been even better, though I\'m definitely not complaining-- I hit the races using the 49-1 and 75-1 shots that ran second, and random horses beat me for the tri in one case and the super in the other.
Miff-- the rules were you put up 6k, bet just like you would ordinarily, with a minimum of 300 per race, no multi-race bets, bet every race. That\'s it, and that\'s why I played this one and the other 2 in California this year-- they are the most like ordinary betting of horses, as opposed to the NTRA format, versions of which are used elsewhere, which has players betting different races, and is strictly about betting longshots that win (as opposed to run well). I tapped in both the other two contests, although I basically lost a photo for the whole shooting match at Santa Anita.
There were 50 players in this one, I think I and Frank from this board were probably the favorites at maybe 10-1 or so going in. At Vegas, I\'ll probably have a better chance than some, but I have to be at least 100-1, all things considered.
Thanks JB,
Just so I understand, you can bet exotics or just WPS? You said signers, so I assume it\'s exotics.
Mike
At DMR you could bet everything including Supers, so no lead was safe. At Hol just WP, at SA everything except supers.
Jerry - It was TVG that gave the impression you hit the stake. The opening question was whether the stake results affected the outcome of the contest in any way and Simon Bray stated that it sure did and that you were in first place.
Don\'t know if you guys saw it (evidently David Rex did), but Bray came around with the microphone and tried to grab Frank just as he was trying to bet a Saratoga race, and Frank blew him off. He then turned to me, I gave him a wise-ass answer because I had no idea he was \"live\".
So he goes to the guy at the next table. Who is a young guy there with his father, not a horseplayer himself, with a magazine in front of him. Bray says what do you use to handicap, and picks up the magazine to show the camera-- Maxim.
To me doing live TV or radio is very stressful (the DRF Expo was off the charts), I avoid it at all costs. And the contest was stressful enough-- given my position in the industry, they feel like pass/fail tests, and I was also trying to concentrate. So I was ducking the TVG guys all day Sunday.
But I did hear Bray called me \"Legendary\"...
I love the fact that you won and won big!
Now, will Len Friedman claim that you won because you had their numbers as well as TG\'s? He tried something like that before with the NHC champion one year - didn\'t he?
Deb-- two other guys on their board were pushing that idea, Len told them to knock it off.
Congratulations on a job beautifully done. First prize should have included that you get to stay in Del Mar instead of having to return to sizzling New York.
The only glaring mistake you made was making me a co-favourite given my dismal record in these events. Aside from that you were near perfect.
Good luck in the big one in Vegas.
Frank
Jerry - Nice going at Dmr !!! Win or lose in Vegas , your definately the #1 handicapper - and you know it ! Congradulations !!!!!!!
well done Jerry.
unbelievable numbers you put up there if you think about it.
have anything left in you for the seminars this w/e?
,.....
and can we expect to see your v&v filly run at the spa this year??
TGJB:
Let me add Congrats-- a blowout win for you in CA, the Mets moving like a tremendous machine--
TGJB you mentioned you were the 10-1 favorite in the contest. I read somewhere else that rumor has it you bet $10,000 to win on yourself in Vegas resulting in a $100,000 score.
Care to tell me and the IRS if that is true or not.
Michael-- I\'ll be up there Sat and Sun to lead the discussions, Pinata will be staying out West.
