In the East they love the tradition and the quality of the Spa....in the west they love the pagentry and style where the surf meets the turf.
If you are talking about the overall Quality of racing IMO hands down Saratoga is Better heck there will be days that Delmar will card 7 of the 9 races for Claimers.
Besides the \"pagentry and style,\" I guess they also love their 5 horse fields. Less time for handicapping and more time to work on their tan.
Good Luck,
Joe B.
in years where both meets are at their very best , saratoga wins becouse of the larger fields and value\'s easier to find on a daily basis .
i vote for saratoga, i clearly am at my best in picking winners on the majority of days that are rained off the turf!!!!
yawn, this debate goes on every summer
different stroks for different folks. no doubt that saratoga has a deeper pool of horses with several states shipping horses in and thus has a better product, but you have to deal with many many days of rain were the turf racing turns to 4 and 5 horse dirt races after hourse of planning. You also have to deal with pletcher the first two weeks (probably runs at 80% tops that period).
It will be interesting to see if the trends continue from belmont summer where the straight alw races and high level claiming races could hardly fill unless they run optional claiming.
good point . though with all the rain we\'ve gotton here in the past month or so , hopefully the rainy season came early this year . plus they need the rain out west more than we do in ny ...

If you are going to sit on your butt and bet TVG then SAR is your gig.
If you are going for the setting, the weather, the ambiance, then DMR wins hands down. There is never a worry about rain, heat, humidity, etc.... knowing it will be 75 - 80 degrees and sunny without ridiculous crowds, overpriced hotels and food, and overwhelming traffic, then DMR is king.
I\'ve been to both... and for the on-track experience, DMR wins...easily.
Saratoga has the same crowd as Aqueduct, just a different place. I was grateful in my years at NYRA NOT to have to go there.
So if you really want to have a good time, go to Del Mar. The racing ain\'t as good, but the cost is the same with far fewer assholes and many more novices which might help your bankroll.
There are two threads currently on this board and I don\'t really understand why they continue.
Saratoga and Del Mar can BOTH be great places to spend a day at the races. What makes them great is that in each place an entire community is dedicated to the enjoyment of thoroughbred racing for 6 weeks. Why does one venue have to be better than the other? How could one ever prove that one is better than the other?
Likewise the great TG v Rags debate. Why does one need to be better than the other, and how could it ever be proved? Certainly not by the six week, two (one?) track showdown which is scheduled for this summer.
As I have said before, if I really had the desire to decide for myself which product was better, I might want to investigate the paid \"circulation\" of the respective products, or possibly the earnings of the respective companies. Since neither company is publicly traded, I do not expect this information to be forthcoming.
The posters on the respective boards who instigated this great showdown, and TGJB, are looking for instances where the two products differ wildly in their assessment of an animal\'s performance. As a horseplayer I may be more interested to see where both products AGREED on a particular animal\'s abilities, and to see if there is any value on these horses.
MO: I have been going to the races at Aqueduct and Saratoga for more than 25 years and your comment that the same people are attending the races at these two places is not very accurate.

Saratoga has the same crowd as the Big A? You should expand your circle of friends, nothing could be farther from the truth. I speak form experience, I have been to all NYRA tracks hundreds of times over the last 30 yrs.
I worked for NYRA for 5 years and have been to the spa a few times. You see what you want, I call em\' like I see \'em. I have also been to Del Mar a dozen times. (I was the only one in the press box with a winning ticket on Dare and Go when he beat Cigar).
Peace.
Then Lee Rousso and Jim Quinn must not have been in there, because their winning tickets - and mine - on Dare and Go were for the Pick 3! And Lee Rousso even gave out Dare and Go as a single in the Pick 6 at the National Turf seminar put on by Jeff Siegel and Bob Selvin that morning across the street. Neither of them however, used the horse, as they both fell victim to the hype about Cigar.
Mott handled the horse beautifully, even better than what Woody Stephens did with Smarten. He managed to avoid the Santa Anita Handicap and the Hollywood Gold Cup thinking that by the time the Pacific Classic came around all the good horses would be used up or out of commission.
But you can\'t fool Dick Mandella! First off, Jerry rode another horse in the Hollywood Gold Cup and saw only saw the heels of Mandella\'s Siphon, which even Jerry admits caused him to chase that one in the Pacific Classic. Then Corey Nakatani wanted to get into the act, and his move on Dramatic Gold not only lost him any chance of friendship with Bailey, but also got him barred from Paulson\'s Del Mar Country Club and taken off all of David Hoffman\'s horses. Yet even without that kind of help, Dare and Go was the first Grade 1 horse (other than what Holy Bull would have done had he not been injured) to come between Cigar and the finish line. Alphabet Soup and Skip Away would also beat Cigar and further prove the brilliance of Mott\'s campaign over the skill of Cigar.

You are the same guy who insulted me and my deceased Aunt Margaret on this board. You go to Aqueduct and Saratoga. I rest my case.
I also apologized to you on the board, but that makes your post less fun.
Say whatever you want about me, pal, from this point on I open \"no mo\" MO posts.
richiebee - everyone knows ny got the west coast beat by a mile . sure la is very nice , but there\'s no comparison to ny .
i\'ve noticed that alot of people who can\'t handle ny seem to either have some kind of issue\'s or don\'t like crowds .
though i won\'t be to hasty to write california off the way some jokers have taken a nit wit view of ny , becouse if i were the racing zar ,
i\'d change the \" triple crown \" to \" thoroughbred championship \" and add a 4th race to the tc crown series at dmr @ 7/8\'s on turf and when the horse\'s come out on to the track they can play \" uncle johns band \" by the gratefull dead on the public address system - if you catch my drift ...
Richie...
May the patience of 100 Monks be with you (once said to me by a Jesuit up on Rose Hill).
No way in Hell is the Aqueduct Crowd \"the representation\" of the Saratoga Crowd.
Lets give the Del Mar vs SPA gig a rest. The both have their strong points which far out wiegh their weaknesses, and both meets are best of their respective circuits, which are the best our country has to offer. The topic is rather passe\'.

Hope to See you there.

NCT:
So far my only commitment is for 3 weekdays, Aug 9- 10- 11.
Can not believe its almost 25 years since 1982, the year I had perfect attendance at the Spa (only 28 racing days then). I was working as a night watchman for a Kentucky trainer who trained for a man who was tired of never getting stalls from NYRA, so he built a brand new private barn about two blocks outside the gate near the 7/8s pole.
In 1982, there were a lot of weather cancellations downstate, and they raced for 28 consecutive days at Saratoga. (Thats how sacred the 4 week Spa format was then, they would have never considered making up the lost days by adding a week in July or September). The racing highlight of the meet was a Travers which featured three separate Triple Crown race winners (Gato del Sol, Aloma\'s Ruler and Conquistador Cielo, all left in the wake of longshot Runaway Groom).
The trainer I worked for was known for braiding his animals\' tails and manes on race day and putting pom poms in the animals\' manes. I think he had about 30 starts with 1 or 2 on the board finishes. Steve Crist profiled the trainer in a NY Times article he titled \"Beautiful Losers\". As I recall, a lot of the \"Beautiful Losers\" returned to Keeneland and Churchill in the fall and won at a price off the very poor Spa form.
\" monks \" and \" patience \" in the same sentence - ? but i get your point nct , the subject is one of the least anticipated topic\'s of disscussion on the tg board . good luck at sar ...
You are dealing with the many of the same employees. They pack up and ship up there and get a stipend to offset the rediculous rent. Sure Saratoga draws bigger crowds and obviously the full Aqueduct crowd can\'t afford to ship up there every day, but a lot of them do. Just get on line at the windows and watch what happens 2 minutes to post time.
It has been my experience living in 3 states and performing in 15 states that the \"New Yorker\" and his attitude is despised everywhere west of the Hudson (which is, BTW, one reason why NY got stiffed on federal terrorism funding.) And while some of that is sheer prejudice, guys like Richiebee are the example I refer to. He never apologised to me. He insulted me and my aunt. He\'s an arrogant bully and when he meets his match he crawls back into his hole with comments like \"I\'ll never open a post by MO again\". How much you wanna bet he opens this one?
Del Mar, on the other hand has a totally different crowd and attitude. Many more novice handicappers there. Any New Yorker will tell you so, because New York \"has the greatest handicappers in the country\".
Personally, I like visiting both places. I am from New York, but I would never live in either state anymore. The cost of living is way to high.
MO -
In the interest of clearing the air, I\'d like to confirm that, as he says, Richiebee did apologize to you. I\'ve always enjoyed his posts, and I remember that his personal attack on you struck me as unusual. I later saw the apology when he posted it. The following is cut and pasted from a post of his dated May 1:
\"I prefaced the post by relating that I was listening to George Harrison at the time I was posting. Frequent poster MO seemed to be searching for some connection between Jazil and GH; there was none. When MO questioned me about the post, I unleashed an uncharacteristic personal attack, which I now apologize for.\"

I will be at Saratoga wed.-fri. and DelMar Sunday. I am looking for better racing at the Spa and better sights at DelMar. I expect the amount of money I have when I leave these places will have a lot to do with how I feel about them.

Believe me, you\'ll LOVE the sights.
I searched for his apology and could not find it. I stand corrected.
Bit:
I appreciate your kind words and your attempt at clearing the air.
One time I\'ll have to ask MO how he plays the bugle with his foot in his mouth.
Horribly, but you just proved me correct twice if not thrice with your post. I\'ll play poker with you any time! (BIG SMILEY FACE HERE)
Have a great Saratoga!
might be the year to travel to del mar.
campo decimated ny spring/summer racing with all the state bred and claiming races.
...
opening day card looks decent though. three state breds (but one of them a decent stakes race), only one claimer, three maidens with a lot of promising youngsters, two very good allowance races, and an excellent 2 yr old stakes race. good start, but i worry that the weekday cards are going to be below par this year.
