Title: How wide was Deputy Glitters in the Derby?
Post by: SoCalMan2 on June 09, 2006, 10:00:13 AM
According to equibase and the DRF, he was 11 wide on the second turn, but your race analysis and wide comments have him at 6 wide.  This would seem to me to be quite a disparity and likely to have an impact on the number.

I think the DRF and Equibase are referring to how wide he fanned turning for home.  TGJB, how do you deal with the fan?

Thanks!  I see now -- it does say 11 wide lane which is different than the turn.  My apologies on the confusion.

There seems to be a trackman/chartman at Churchill who has been tremendously exaggerating what path each horse is in.  I remember this happening in the mid 90s at Gulfstream.  3 wide would be labeled anywhere from 7-9 wide.  They must be using Shetland ponys to figure path-width at Equibase.

JJP,

You are correct.Unless it\'s the fan, the guy isn\'t close much of the time. They had Barbaro 5 or 6 wide on the first turn, he was app 3 at most.

The guy calling charts for Kentucky is really bad at his job, as far as paths go.  Just check out some of the short comments on Saturday\'s card alone for the KY horses.  From the Turf Classic on Derby Day:

GOOD REWARD: 5-6w trip
CACIQUE: 5w bid
ENGLISH CHANNEL: 4w

What race was he watching?

He also called WEND \"4w\" in the Distaff Turf.  Whatever...

A couple too many Mint Juleps... He also had barbaro 6 wide in Turn one, which I beleived when i read the chart. When I rewatched the race he was only 2-3 wide at most. I bet on Wend as a single in my exotics that day.  Wend sat inside behind the leader all race and never ever made a move to threaten the leader. Race before wend was loaded with run.

As i recall in the BC Wend didn\'t like the off going Belmont surface that day either.

This gives me a concern about figures made at lesser circuits.  Doesn\'t both Ragozin and TGJB rely on these guys at places where they do not have live ground?  If these chart callers are so terrible in the big leagues on the big days, how good can the guys be in low A ball who do not even get the call up?

Question to TGJB -- after today\'s races, it would be interesting to compare your live ground with the info that people here are identifying as questionable from CD.

SoCal-- we had 3 different guys look at the Derby, and we don\'t rely on those chart comments anywhere. If you bring this up some time after the Belmont I\'ll discuss it at length.
