Title: Good-Bye Gary
Post by: Silver Charm on November 25, 2005, 01:26:52 PM
Another living riding legend moves on. Now that Gary Stevens has decided to retire Racing needs to jump over another high jump bar that was just placed another two inches higher. Having seen Laffit Pincay, Chris McCarron, Eddie D, Pat Day, Gary and soon Jerry move on to a well-deserved, well-earned, easier lifestyle the sport is again challenged to replace not only these great riders, but people and personalities.

These are all characters whose impressions on the sport and the fans stretched from this years Breeders Cup Classic to as far back as the mid-seventies. Front runners, stretch runners it never really seem to matter, they all possessed the intangible that made them better than the next guy.

Gary who came up as a child prodigy, provided several of us with some of our greatest horse racing memories. Steering Silver Charm home in the Ky Derby was certainly one for me, while I\'m sure others remember a thing or two about a particular Belmont. Gary has retired before and returned, transferred his tack to Japan and Europe, done movies and now TV.

Find yourself some nice shady trees, a hammock and kick back and relax. You\'ve \"earned it\".
