Title: Thank you TG and a question for cashers
Post by: Josephus on October 30, 2005, 10:08:15 AM
Great day. Had 4 out of the P6 on a $36 ticket. Win bets on the last 4 winners + the final P4.
Question for all of you big players; was there any way I could have avoided the IRS takeout? Put it in a machine, make a bet and cash the voucher? Would the machine accept such a ticket? My ticket was 2X3X1X1 for $6 on a $1 Pick 4.  The tellers told me I\'d get most of the takeout back at tax time, true?  Also they gave me a copy of the takeout form , but I was surprised I didn\'t have to sign the original. ( I was at the Med. )
Any guidance and information I can get would be apppreciated.

Josephus,

Great handicapping, actually unbelievable. You are allowed to deduct gambling losses to the extent of your winnings. That means you should get a refund of ALL taxes withheld from your winnings IRS bets, assuming your other income is in line.

The gambling loss deduction only applies if you take deductions via Schedule A which you may not unless your total deductions are more than the Standard Deduction.

Also, depending on your State tax regs ,you may have to pay state income tax on the gross amount.

Thamks guys.  Anybody know what would happen if I put that ticket in a SAM and tried to bet off of it?

Josephus-- I think it might explode, be careful.

Aside from Jimbo and you, I know of another occasional poster on this board who crushed the 4k pick 3 with Shug\'s filly in the middle. And I haven\'t heard from Alan yet-- I know he liked her a lot, although as I have said before, the best system in the world is to bet the ones he likes and doesn\'t bet.

Joseph,

In an ATM, the ticket is supposed to be flagged for the IRS window. Try it, you have nothing to lose. They only withold on tickets of 5k or more but you must still \"sign\"

Thanks Miff. I bet in the machines all the time but use a number of vouchers in smaller denominations because I\'ve had tickets \"eaten\" or \"swallowed\" three times;twice I got the unit opened by track personel, but one time the ticket was in shreds.  I\'m sure my betting unit is small ( althoough it\'s going to be larger after hitting that pick4)  in comparison to most of the players on this  board, so I\'m a little leery of putting in an $8ooo ticket. I guess I sound a little naive so thans for your patience in trying to help me out.

I bet a $192 Pk4 ticket and leave Artie Schiller off the ticket at the last minute because I hear Frank Lyons on TV say how great Valixir looks on track.I couldn\'t hear s--t all day but somehow I pick up on that comment.

Had Leriod and Valixir 2x6x8x2. Luckily I had the Exacta Pleasant Home and Society Solection. Wish SF came in third as well. I ran him down underneath the top two in tri\'s. Still won a few bucks but it should have been a really big day. Cashed the last race exacta but had nice win wager on FA.

I keep banging my head against the wall for that manuever. My Head hurts.

PS Intercontinental was the only Speed in that race and she is full sister to Banks Hill. What are we thinking?

The ticket will not cash. You have to take it to a teller to show tax creditials everywhere.

Congrats on a nice score.

My sob story... as many of us did... I HATED LITF and loved Artie... so I decide to make Artie my key for the day.  I have no idea who is going to win the sprint, so I go ALL/AS/with Ashado, Happy Ticket, Stellar Jayne and Society Selection for $5 for a total of 11 x 1 x 4 = $220.  Will pays after Artie range from $880 for Ashado to $2200 for Society for $1.  Of course, we know the story.

What\'s worse is I key Artie in tris and supers over seven horses, but not Gorella.  So for all that, I have a solid win bet, but big deal. I wanted to launch my TV when I saw Whipper flying on the outside, but getting nipped for 3rd.

Not a great day.  What really tops it is I key Perfect Drift in first and second in tris and supers with Saint Liam, Borrego, Flower Alley, Super Frolic, and Choctaw Nation... but do nothing with him in third. When I saw who finished 4th I immediately shut off TV and computer and left the house.
