jerry,
1)i was curious if you or anybody else knew if a horse named colonel moran, who won the gotham in 1980, ever produced any stakes winners?
2)also, what type of number did uss tinosa get in the santa anita derby? if i recall he went back for the first time, but he might be competitive next week.
3)i know much was made about different wood figures, but i was in mid-town last sat. and a guy had rag #\'s and showed me blue burner\'s 2#. do you think that was a function of simply not splitting the variant or a different interpretion of the wind\'s affects as well--it was bad that day as i recall?
4)finally, although its not a handicapping-related question, i feel that its an important issue in light of HP\'s unfortunate recent departure...i was wondering how you or others (even point given gal-michelle)introduce significant others to tolerating or even co-pursuing your handicapping interests?
nice job on marlboro recap by the way tgab.

TG--1. We don\'t have a sire profile for Colonel Moran. The database does not go back that far. He did sire Major Moran who I believe was a minor stakes winner in Fla.
2. Preakness sheets will be available soon.
3. Ultimately you have to cut the 2 turn races loose, so it\'s not about wind. You can only get to where they did by tieing it to the sprints.
4. I have found it is much more easier with sheets than drf or program--everyone has seen a graph.
thanks. i haven\'t pushed the handicapping thing too much lately (so as not to risk being pensioned).
also, how seriously should one take john ward\'s recent comments about the preakness? is the ill will so bad that booklet will be sent to the front regardless?
Charliem, In \"Casino\", there\'s a scene where Joe Pesci squashes a guy\'s head in a vice and he names \'Charlie M\', and then Joe turns the crank. I\'m responding because I wanted to ask, is that you? And, if it is, how did that whole thing go?
Just to make this clear, in fairness to my wife, she had nothing to do with my retirement. She likes going to the track and she did, in fact, pick War Emblem after one quick riff through.
If you have a wife or a significant other, take her to a track where the horses are running (not a simulcast site). The sight of the actual beasts is helpful. The track is fun if you win or lose. Convey this. Dress up a little so she can dress up too. They like that. Women also like greeting cards and they do not like the Three Stooges. That\'s all I know. If you take the wife, the focus may initially have to be more on her and telling her what is going on, rather than a serious betting day. The figures are actually helpful because, for a newcomer, they can be much clearer than the heiroglyphics of the racing form. Women may actually get this pattern-stuff better than men.
I have to stop posting because I don\'t have a middle gear, and I have a job. Nothing at all to do with the Mrs.
Steve Plever, a recent subject here, obviously has a reading problem, or he would have seen that I spent as much (maybe more) time here attacking Jerry than I did on Irwin. Irwin apologized. What the hell Plever was doing in there I have no idea. Apparently a man of my enormous complexity is too much for him to grasp. Gotta go. Thanks for all the kind words, but duty calls. HP
How you convince your wife that racing is the \"greatest game\" depends primarily on what kinds of things your wife is already interested in. Invitations to pre-Derby bashes, the Lexington Ball, & other similar events works for many. In fact, Cot Cambell\'s partnerships became successful because one of the female partners was featured in a large spread in the Sunday mag of the Atlanta Const. If your wife is an avid golfer or shopper, there are certainly trks located near those activities, not to mention some of the great racing trips you can take to foreign venues. There are also certain things you can do while you are on a racing trip & which you probably don\'t do as often as you should when you\'re at home that will have your wife acually looking forward to her next trip to the trk.
The above horse exists in the pedigrees of several good Florida horses. These horses were generally trained by Manny Tortora and owned by the owner of Mecke. I think the owner of Mecke was Jim Lewis, but my alzheimers is interferring. For Major Moran to become a sire I suspect he did win a stakes somewhere along the line but am not sure. I\'ll always remember Mecke. Not for his Arlington Million and Super Derby wins, but for his second race as a two year old. He finished the perfecta at about 20-1 to another high odds horse.
Tabitha
When did Irwin apologize?
thank you, hp, mall and tabitha. i\'ve found over the years that its a delicate balance. trying to compensate for weekend nights handicapping by getting nice seats and other so-called \'\'trips\'\', where the main focus turns out to be the track rather than the other scenic destinations, is tough.
by the way, although i remember that scene from casino, charlie moran refers to the main character from \"pope of greenwich village\". i don\'t think his last name is mentioned except for once in the middle of the movie.
an old friend comes up to him outside of an otb (i think the old one on 14th street--anybody?)and he says, \'\'chalie moran, nobody ever made money in there\'\' or something to that effect.
which brings me to another question. in the movie, eric roberts\' character is forever saying that horses aren\'t like people--they can\'t improve their condition in life, and are defined by their genes. he also talks of artificially inseminating horses. excuse my ignorance, but why isn\'t artificial insemination possible with horses?
has anybody yet read the book, \"Stud\" by kevin conley, which goes into explicit detail about the breeding business? is it any good?
A.I. is possible with horses & in fact is pretty much the exclusive method used with standardbreds. It can be used with thoroughbreds as well, but under Jockey Club Rules the foal cannot be registered & therefore could not race. Proponents of A.I. usually make arguments along the lines that it is safer & more \"advanced\". Those opposed often say that the natural way is the best way to introduce new breeding strains, thereby avoiding what used to be a relatively common situation in harness racing, namely all or most of the runners have the same sire. Conspiracy types say that a few prominant & wealthy families keep control of the best bloodlines be limiting the no. of times a stallion can be bred. In the movie you mention, my recollection is that Rourke\'s sidekick secretly stole some of Secretariat\'s sperm so that a mdn which looked like he had avg breeding was actually sired by Big Red, which didn\'t make a lot of sense at the time, as Big Red\'s problems in the breeding shed were actually what led to the so-called \"fertility rollover\" provision in stallion syndications.
This is the post.
\"He could have apologized then, and he can do so now. He\'s said nothing in the time since, so I guess he doesn\'t think there was anything wrong with it.\"
I apologize if my joke offended anybody. My joke was intended to bring some levity to a dire situation, nothing more.
If I missed the mark, I am sorry.
I may not quite be retarded, but my sense of humor can be offbeat, especially if one is unfamiliar with it.
Since you said you are not an American, is it possible you failed to get the joke?
HP -- The early part he is quoting me. I had wondered in a post if Irwin was retarded since Plever had to represent him. The \'American\' thing is for another guy (Frank) who responded on the thread, which is still up.
I don\'t mean to provoke more craziness. It\'s an apology, which is a good thing.

I don\'t know, HP. That looks like a conditional, non-apology apology, especially when it\'s combined with the idiotic comment he made to Frank. Shortly after Irwin told the joke, he posted a reply in which he provided a link to TG\'s temporary site. That was an apology on someone else\'s dime. It was deleted very quickly.
I disagree. Few things in life are resolved perfectly. The good outweighs the bad here, and it\'s more than I expected. In my experience, a perfectly satisfying reply is just so damn rare. HP
Irwin used to be a professional writer. I believe he wrote a couple of novels before he became a turf writer. He knew exactly what he was doing with that \"apology.\" But you\'re right. Few things are resolved perfectly. Why don\'t you hang around so that we can try to increase the number?
Some of the failings of this apology have been pointed out to me by an IMPORTANT player in this drama. However, as a PROFESSIONAL WRITER with DEADLINES and NO racing stable, I MUST get back to my real job. By the way, regarding another thread, the Swiss are FAR WORSE than the Germans. HP
One should be no more ambitious than is absolutely necessary. I\'m going to drink some more gatorade and go back to bed. You are now REQUIRED to find a way to elaborate on that Swiss-German comment. Remember the horse Swiss Courts Cheat?
I will find a way to get back to you on the Swiss thing in another venue. HP
HP: Thank you.
TG: Was my reply to Chuckles/Tabitha deleted? This new board still confuses me.
You should be barred from using caps.
I agree on all 3 counts.
You and everyone else. Evidently it is still there, but not listed(?). I did think about taking it down- we all get it about Chuckles, and I don\'t need another war.
JB: HP will stop using CAPS if you stop with all those damn dashes and learn how to put space before and after parentheses.
The neutral freakin\' back stabbing, pond scum Swiss!?!?
Yup, the neutral Swiss. Back both sides of a war, that way you\'re \"neutral\". Instruemental in supporting the Reich\'s war machine early on. Guess who processed the silver and gold from the mouth\'s of Holocaust victims? Heaven\'s no! Not the Swiss! Who sucked up the bank accounts of war and Holocaust victims, estimated in billions, yes billions of dollars. Not the beloved Swiss!!!!! Oh no.
In the next big war, nuke them bastards first!
bdhsheets: The question is whether the Swiss were \"FAR WORSE\" than the Nazis. It is possible to be utterly horrible and still not get there. (I think HP was kidding.)
You wrote something on the Paceadvantage board that I found perplexing: \"Sheet theory says 0 (top) followed by an effort within 2 pts of the new top will lead to an X, an effort 4 pts + from the new top.\" Isn\'t this too categorical? I would have asked you over there, but I don\'t want to be in the same room as Boxcar, who is one of the most despicable morons I have ever come across, and I have come across a lot. (Please tell him I said that, and that the list of his factual errors on his contemptible Middle East string is up to 123.)

The nature of the top is by far the most important aspect of any analysis.
The post was aimed at those that really don\'t follow these speed figs. But at some point one has to draw lines somewhere. The comments were directed to Harlan and I thought long and hard about it, especially when HH had run several of the \"2\'s\" so to speak which were tops.
Generally, those on an \"0-2-X\" are short prices. In my minds eye, dissmissing them is the way to bet. So you miss a short priced tri/exa when they run, no loss in the long run. Of course if a repeat of the \"2\" is competitive and a big price, then you play for a repeat. Price dictates most plays.
I really don\'t post or drop in that often on the PA board, it runs in streaks.
I\'m starting a study on \"0-2-X\" and other patterns. I\'ve downloaded thousands of races from all over so it should be fairly representative. Buuut something tells me to keep a separate record of the big circuits vs the small. 3yo\'s will be by themselves. I\'ll see how it goes. LOL If you have a request, let me know.
bdhsheets: I figured there was an innocent explanation. I\'m sorry for the PA ambush. I have no one but myself to blame for reading the \"off topic\" section of their message board. Also, I was testy because my Colorado Avalanche were facing elimination on the road. Thank God for Peter Forsberg. Good luck with your research. The drudgery will prove worthwhile. Let\'s keep arguing about Switzerland and Germany until HP \"unretires\" like all those boxers.
