Title: Baffy gets another
Post by: gvido on February 17, 2005, 11:40:53 AM
Whirlaway winner was purchased by Stonerside Stable and will be in the hands of Bob Baffert.

Not sure how much Baffy will get out of him coming from Allen Iwinski. I\'m guessing a poor purchase.

This will be a great test of the
Baffert Triple Crown program. I
have watched Sort in all of his
Inner Tube races, and Baffert
and the McNair\'s opinion means more
than mine, BUT

1)3 of his 4 wins have been
  on the quirky inner course;

 2)He benefitted from a perfect ride/
  trip in his last;

3)The horse who had dead aim on him
  in the Whirlaway, Naughty New
Yorker, has shown a lack of guts in
the lane in his last 2. A younger
  more cynical Richiebee would make
  a Samyn comment here.

I know Sort\'s Beyer was 95. What about
his TG?

I am curious to see what BB can do
with this animal. I have always con-
sidered Iwinski to be what you
guys call a move-up trainer. Very
interesting.

Totally agree rich, I think this is a terrible buy, but if your desperate I guess there may not be alot for sale this year as alot of the big horses are for top owners this season

The market for 3yos is insane right now, I would love to hear what Stonerside paid. From what I heard the connections of Scrappy T turned down mid six figures (he\'s a GELDING), Naughty New Yorker\'s connections turned down 7 figures. There are several other insane ones I\'ve heard, too. Looks like we got a great deal with Santana Strings (200k), and the private purchase maiden pointed for the Capposella at Aqu that I believe was \"sheets connected\" (in this case, almost definitely for real) was probably a good buy as well, depending on what they paid for it. At 200, excellent value, at 400 fair value, etc.

CH-- I respect a lot of your opinions, but you are missing the point(s). It\'s not about you, and your betting. There are people who are competing against these guys, and others of us who don\'t want to have to guess, or want to be able to use the skills we have developed to predict natural form cycles. Also, you keep focusing on individual jump-up performances-- my point is that we don\'t do that. We look at large bodies of data. We have set up a program here to do exactly that, for when I am considering rcommending a horse for purchase-- we can look at all of any trainer\'s starters for any time period, to see what happens for them compared to those who had the horses before and after.

As for paying attention to how trainer\'s runners are doing over a time period versus another time period in deciding whether something is or was going on-- if you think Scettino\'s runners are doing now what they were doing last summer, or if you think Dutrow\'s horses ran the same at Saratoga as at the Belmont meet that followed, or that Lake got the same results he gets other places IN TERMS OF FIGURES in 03 at Saratoga, or that Shuman gets the same results other places that he got at his big GP meet, you are dreaming. That\'s why we have the \"last 90 day\" stat. And if you look at that stat at Delaware Park, you will see that 90% of the races are won by someone with a 20% or higher rating in that category.

So on a completely unrelated note, I think Baffert will have a tough time improving Iwinski\'s horse.

I thought Sort it Out ran a great race. Naughty New Yorker and Scrappy T both ran a bit better in my opinion and at a glance they all looked sufficiently bred for 10 marks. From one viewing, it didn\'t look like Naughty was getting towards the end of the rope, looked more like he ran outta ground against a horse that is bred nice for distance. Going by gut impressions, its hard to say Naughty hung vs. Scrappy in the prior also. They are both competent looking horses right now. If those top four stay fit they are the type an owner would love to have in his barn.

Granted the test will come when the track is bigger or in Florida or in Kentucky.

How much did Stonerside pay? I gotta figure close to a million. More than that might be a bad bet. It all boils down to price doesnt it?

Hard to say what kinda horse FuRok is and even harder to project Roman Ruler at Churchill Downs. Baffert needed a backup.

A question for all of the Baffert
watchers out there-- Does he leave
\"Tiny\" Tim Thornton on the horse??
(I guess Mr McNair has some input
here also).

I love all the trainer talk, but
I am more fascinated with the 7 or 8
NYRA trainers who year after year
saddle over 100 horses and win 5%
or less of their races. i will
name no names.

How do they continue to get horses?
How do they continue to get stalls?
HOW DO THEY MAKE A LIVING?

They make a living by betting on the guys who train at 36% over the Aqueduct inner oval.

Good Luck,
