Title: Collmus strikes again
Post by: P-Dub on May 04, 2024, 05:09:11 PM
Has he figured out that its Mystic Dan taking the lead and not Resilience??

The colt had a 4 length lead before this genius finally figured it out, giving 2 calls to Resilience before it finally registered.

I watched every race on my computer with Travis Stone calling the races, then watched the replay on my TV.

Are we stuck with this guy until he retires??

That was the worst effing call, on one of the greatest finishes in the history of the Derby...........and it was the 150th

He screwed up one of the greatest BC races of all time - Beholder vs Songbird - by being tongue tied, shrieking, and giving a pedestrian description of that stirring stretch battle.

2 legendary races

2 incredibly brutal race calls.

Enough of this guy

They need to have an alternate channel where you choose your fav race caller.

For the love of God can someone make that happen??

Mine That Bird was pretty bad too.

I do the same thing-watch the feed on my computer on big race days.

I wish they would all just use the track call for the Triple Crown.

I believe Tom Durkin made that call not Collmus.

Correct. Durkin missed MTB coming up the rail in the dim light and slop. That missed call is what started him on the road to retirement. He has stated in interviews he was very anxious and stressed by the Triple Crown races.

Agree, just a horror show of a call.

Meanwhile, Travis Stone with an all-timer. From about 3/8ths out he recognizes FY and SL\'s moves, instantly calls, \"Mystik Dan cuts the corner!\" virtually AS Hernandez hits (creates?! ha!) that hole, talks about nobody but those 3 from then to the wire, and correctly states the order of finish after announcing that it is a photo finish. Incredibly deft performance in the biggest of all spots.

What is it about CD that causes announcers to miss horses coming thru at the rail?    Not only these 2 examples but also Trevor Denman missed Street Sense in the BC Juvenile.  I never see this happening anywhere else.

Love or hate Aikman and Buck, they provide a big game feel. And they\'re far from perfect.

Same with Collmus.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Love Aikman and Buck.

Yes they provide a big game feel.

Sorry Collmus doesn\'t

He tries to. Unfortunately I think that’s his mistake. He tends to overdramatize the stretch runs putting style before substance and misses the true narrative. It’s something of an epidemic amongst American sportscasters. Australian race callers have it all over us. Their pre race narratives are knowledgeable and entertaining. They don’t miss a beat.

One of the announcers in Hong Kong, McNamara , an Aussie, is spot on. In the middle of the race call , mid race, he like starts to add like color commentary to the race call, almost always with 14 horse fields.

It could be a use it or lose it type thing. He doesn\'t call races anywhere else . Just go with the race. Trying to script it gets him into trouble.
They all make mistakes, which is understandable,  but it seems like NBC wants to make calling the race a bigger deal. They always do a segment or bit every year, and show his previous race calls.

Just call the race, the race makes the call.
