Title: An Opportunity Wasted
Post by: Edgorman on March 13, 2020, 06:22:30 AM
Would it be so difficult for a racetrack PR department to call CNN and ask them, during their sports segments listing all shut downs, to mention that racetracks are open??  And, you can wager from home!!

The problem is you’re thinking logically.

Fox Business just mentioned it. Race Tracks are open.

Interview a Vegas Casino guy and they want consideration for a Govt Handout like Cruise Ships etc....

Well, if you walk into a sports book, it\'s your only option.  Wouldn\'t be shocked to see the non-racing degenerates pile into Oaklawn\'s pools this week.

E - I\'ll bet they have, but it\'s not a real positive headline like horse deaths or drugging horses. THAT, they have time for...THIS is CNN.  I remember CNN back in the day when Ted had it as a real news organization.

You make a good point, though.  When I retired the 1st time, I wanted to work for a track in PR and do the kind of thing you refer to.  And have gift shops sell quality merchandise like they do in real sports, not the crap you see everywhere you go in racing (sorry KNLD, even your stuff is less brand quality than it used to be - at east clothing).  It\'s embarrassing what the Del Mar shops are selling , let alone GP.
I will say this for a track that has suddenly realized why all those TX license plates are at Oaklawn - purses up at Lone Star, commercials regularly for the last month on sports radio, expectations high.  I didn\'t go one day last meet to Lone Star.  I\'ll be there this year.  It ain\'t hard.  Regualrly have 2,000, but if there is a promotion - even $1 beer that has expiration date - it\'s 9,000.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for horse racing.  (At least I hope it is.)

Flood the Intertubes with FREE past performances.

And, when the crisis passes, keep those past performances free.

Oh, and lower takeout.  That too.

Takeout should be lower during these times less employees to pay.
Only game in town for gambling larger pools.
Promote the crap out of it

People are hoping for a 10f race on May 2.

Why not run the Travers at Aqu or Bel on May 2? Stronach could hold the Preakness at GP, then back to NY for the Belmont 3 weeks later.

They could fill the usual Travers day card with the new turf triple races.

The best wager anyone here could make would be to book the bets of anyone who thinks there will be still be racing in the New York City area on May 2nd.

Maybe. The kicker is that NYRA and other tracks are providing tax revenue for the states.

So were MLB, NBA, and NHL, but they shut down.

They needed live gate. TGPS handle is up over 60%. On line data sales are down a little.

Well, didn’t take long for the shutdowns to start. More to follow.

I said it days ago racing will be done by 4/1.

It just takes one person to be infected to shut down a track. I\'m shocked nobody at SA has it yet.

Enjoy these last few days of racing

Before heading overseas, Fair Grounds is putting on a decent card Saturday
Download some TGs, stock up the refrigerator at Living Room Downs and laissez
les bon temps roulez
.

One last chance to roll dem bones, because I agree with P-Dub, I do not think
there will be much racing anywhere after April 1. I think testing will reveal that
there is no backstretch in North America that is free from infected workers, and
that all tracks will follow NYRA\'s precedent.

That’s a damn good card Richie.

TG, food, drink all from LVD sounds like a great idea. Hopefully we can talk handicapping Sat afternoon. Hope all is well

Like they have been saying 80% of us will get it and not even know it.
Logically speaking if they test positive it’s to late.
I say let them run..

And that\'s the type of attitude that is leading to the disaster we have coming up. \"Let me do what I want\" is how we all get sick at once, hospitals are overwhelmed, and people start dying of other treatable conditions because there is no treatment.

Trust me I get it
I also get that there is a flip side to this
And I very much hope I am wrong with this thought.
America is on sale right now and Magically China has had no new cases for two days factories are back open for business.
 Any word from Russia?
In military terms was the virus the bait?
Maybe years of training for the “what if” my  brain is programmed to think like this.
I also know the economic downfall will affect 100% of America not 20% like the virus
To say the least I am very concerned.
FYI, I’m a paramedic/firefighter I don’t say this to gloat I say this because I’m out there and I truely get everyone’s concerns.
As I said I hope I am very wrong.
God bless
John

Agree 100% Richie...IMO All racing will shut down by Sunday night...also, depending on the \"social distancing\" and what happens in the next week and a half with the numbers, most of the country will go on hiatus for a couple of weeks... really is the only way to limit to spread...

Johnny:

Appreciate that you are a first responder, BUT

...if the illness spreads amongst backstretch workers (many of whom do not have
healthcare), who is going to take care of the horses?

I\'m not saying that there will be a lot of deaths among the backstretch workers,
but if they are too sick to work?

The only thing all seem to agree on is that social distancing and some form of
quarantine will prevent many deaths.

I get it Mr.Bee I really do
And my intentions to post about my career was not looking for pats on the back.
I am just very concerned about the big picture which at this time is two viruses.

Good luck to us all..
John
PS
I am playing Louisiana tomorrow and may just enter my first tournament..
