Another training fatality at SA today? When does the BC jump ship and move? Surface or Supplements?
[Princess Lili B was a 3-year-old filly bred, owned, and trained by veteran horseman David Bernstein, best known as the trainer of 1994 champion older male The Wicked North. On Thursday morning, after Princess Lili B was put down following a half-mile work in 53 seconds, Bernstein was understandably rattled.
“She was perfect,†Bernstein said. “The work was slow because she never works fast. She didn’t have a lot of talent, she was just kind of a horse. But she was my horse.â€]
I know this board is about handicapping and finding value, I get that.
Reading the comments from Bernstein, particularly the last line, really hit home. Heart breaking to read that.
Finally someone in \'merica says NO LASIX. Trainers are going crazy on twitter already......LOL.....

A good start--maybe what???--30 years late!
I didn\'t read the article yet--will they actually have meaningful penalties against trainers who violate these policies or just the usual slap on the proverbial wrist?
Does this mean NO LASIX for the Breeders Cup?
IDK
From BC website. I guess it is current policy for them as stated below. More at the link below than what I have cut and pasted here. But today things changed from what they have currently written obviously.
We were successful in implementing event-specific race conditions for 2012 and 2013 which prohibited race day administration of furosemide in Breeders\' Cup two-year old races in cooperation with the CHRB, Santa Anita and the TOC. However, in evaluating host-site options for 2014, it became apparent that the race-day medication policy for 2014 would have to be consistent with rules in effect in any eligible host jurisdiction at the time of the event. The horsemen\'s groups in potential host jurisdictions indicated that they would withhold their approval of simulcast rights unless this was the case, jeopardizing our ability to conduct simulcast wagering on our event, and thus the event itself.
There has been good progress toward uniformity on model rules in the US over the last several months and the Breeders\' Cup has endorsed that effort. To date, no racing jurisdiction in the US has established a policy eliminating the use of all race-day medications and none of our potential future host sites has been able to offer assurances that such an eventuality is likely in the near term.

I read the proposal-not only sounds great but seems cause to raise takeout to pay for it. I doubt anything would hardly change under these protocols.
Send a few of the cheating beyond comprehension horsemen or the morally bankrupt vets to prison and see if that helps.
I\'m very confident that if I rigged races on a daily basis being bet upon nationwide that I would see the inside of a prison cell.
Meanwhile didn\'t I see Bianacobra back in the news recently?
I agree totally, P-Dub.
So now we won’t see anymore breakdowns, right??
Yeah. Funny thing is this could end up being a good thing. It might end up getting the industry off trying to pass legislation conflating lasix with illegal drugs.
\"Organizations who advocate for animal welfare have also affirmed their support for these measures. Kathy Guillermo, Senior Vice President for PETA said, \'PETA thanks Santa Anita for standing up to all those who have used any means to force injured or unfit horses to run. This is a historic moment for racing and PETA urges every track to recognize that the future is now and to follow suit. This groundbreaking plan will not bring back the 22 horses who have died recently, but it will prevent the deaths of many more and will set a new standard for racing that means less suffering for Thoroughbreds.\'\"
You know they are desperate when they can no longer tell the difference between praise and a noose.
And here\'s how that quote was followed up on PETA\'s Twitter account:
\"Racing must go the way of the animal circus, but this will eliminate some of the misery of its way out.\"

Wow!
https://www.drf.com/news/hovdey-stronach-response-runs-hot-and-cold
saw this on the internet, thought it wasinteresting
Number of thoroughbred horses in America who made 25+ starts and won 5+ races in a single season:
2018: 0
2017: 0
2016: 1
1998: 8
1997: 17
1996: 17
1995: 23
1994: 26
1993: 37
1992: 52
52 different horses did it in 1992 alone. Only one over the last 3 years. zero last 2 years
philywheel
Can you also get fatalities to me plot with this? Would be fascinating
25 starts in a year is one just about every two weeks.
Oscar Barrera died in \'91!
Where were these horses running or is there an actual list with locations/types of races and their wins?
\"Chiming Jet, a Tri Jet mare who earlier raced for breeder Fred Hooper, started five times in 22 days, winning twice, finishing second once and third once.
Even better was Teriyaki Stake, a $20,000 Barrera claim that won six consecutive races, all of them in March of 1986: $22,500 claiming races on March 2 and 10; a $35,000 claiming race March 13; a $45,000 claiming race March 21; an allowance race on March 25, and a $47,500 claimer March 31.
The most famous of all was Shifty Sheik, a $35,000 claim in 1984 who won three straight in 13 days for Barrera, then took 10 days off before jumping into Grade 1 company and almost beating champion Slew o\' Gold in the Woodward Stakes.\"

Comprehensive records on racing fatalities in the US dates only to 2009.

Teriyaki Stake comes with a story, but it’s not mine to tell...
Owner Glenn Lane claimed Teriyaki Stake from David Vance early in the 1985 Meadowlands meet. I trained for Glenn. TS was a gorgeous, stout filly with ankles that looked like grapefruits. Could not get her sound enough to train never mind re-enter. Sent her to New Bolton and I will never forget the letter they sent back.
TS will never race again and will probably not be able to support carrying a foal. Ouch!
After an extended all out barn effort - and a nearly fatal setback - she got back to the races for a $16,000 tag. As she went into the starting gate I turned to Glenn and said that I had done my job.
TS won that night. That was gravy. We sent her to NY and I believe we ran her for $20,000. She finished second and was claimed. We were sick when we got the claim
slip.
As Rich Curtis suggested, racing seems to have trouble distinguishing between a lifeline and a noose.
Thought you all might like to know that PETA\'s laudatory statement from March 15th (below) has now been deleted from its site.
It\'s one thing for Belinda to have been played for a sap, but the Jockey Club really should have known better.
Last one leaving Santa Anita, please turn out the lights. As Dandy Don would say, the party\'s over.

Today\'s fatality is front and center on the LA Times website.

Here is the link for those interested also check out @jbark131 on twitter-
She lasted quite a while in decent racing form after that. 15 months & 26 ! starts
How to explain it ?
