Raw or Die Episode 2: Triple Frown?

Is Justify being given synthetic steroids or performance-enhancing drugs?

Is this Triple Crown a bust due to the dodging of top competition?
Email me or comment on the video page.
I\'m curious what people really think about Baffert given the statistical improbability of his successes over the history of the Triple Crown, and in NY, especially considering his 4 for 4 win record last year in stakes races on Belmont Stakes day.
I\'d also like to know what are the exact current industry practices for detecting illegal drugs i.e. how much money does each state spend, what technologies are in place, how many drugs of the total possible are currently being tested using mass spectrometry, why aren\'t surveillance cameras in place year round, and how hard is it to fool the lab technicians?
These tough questions need to be asked on a regular basis as does the NFL and MLB. It\'s time to understand what is really going on. Call me naive or ignorant but I want to know the science and facts and I believe it should be far easier to access this information to provide the utmost transparency to the wagering public. Furthermore, I\'m concerned for the welfare of the horse longterm.
May the horse be with you,

Awesome and spot on Mr. Hellmers. This is the chapter on \"Move Up Trainers\" which must be written and this problem is evident at all class levels in this game. We know the names.
Where are the whistleblowers who may be witnessing the alleged dispensings of the PEDS? This can\'t be done in a vacuum.
I\'ve been asking this for years about the great one.
Statistically, 5 billion to one.
It\'s really hard to get past those seven deaths in 16 months. On the other hand, you can\'t hang a man with no proof.
It\'s been a long time since I posted, but I have some experience with professional human sports doping, so I thought I might contribute a little.
Regarding Justify, I\'ve been convinced he\'s on a regimen since the foot problem. Most dopers shoot up in between their toes to hide the bruises. I imagine shooting up in a hoof is no different. If you shoot up into the most obvious places--sholders, flanks, withers--the tenderness is exposed just by rubbing your hands along the animal, even if you can\'t see the bruise for the hair.
If you shoot up in a hoof you\'d want the hind on the horse\'s less dominant side. Like humans, most animals are righthanded, Justify\'s lameness was in his rear, left hoof. Injection site tenderness is very short lived (think of when you\'ve gotten a vaccination). The horse was reshod with an ordinary shoe.
For EPO, you want to shoot up no later and no earlier than 3 weeks out to evade testing and still have a full tank. You also want to avoid any serious physical exertion during that time period, because not only is the EPO itself being metabolized naturally, exertion accelerates this. Between the KY Derby and the SA Derby the horse loped around in 1:13s, between the KY Derby and the Preakness the horse didn\'t do much of anything. The best time to dope is immediately after your last test, like the day after the KY Derby or SA Derby.
Two weeks out the EPO tank is maybe still 3/4 to 2/3 full. Running in the Preakness could have knocked another 1/4 to 1/3 off or more. The longer an athlete is on EPO, the less EPO their own bodies produce, sort of like how chapstick use over time ruins your lips\' ability to fight chapness on their own, so the amount lost varies with use. In the Tour de France, the mid-Tour rest day was the re-up day, 1.5 weeks in. With the Preakness and the Belmont testing, the horse is likely unable to re-up due to testing. Last week, both Baffert and Barnes said repeatedly they wished they could run him last week, which seems counterintuitive given the need for the freshest horse possible for the Belmont.
The next step is recovery, which is the purpose of steriods. The steriod of choice with humans is testosterone, because like EPO, it occurs naturally and is difficult to test for. The key indicators of testosterone use is muscle sculpting and aggression. In fact, if you give a girl a short boost of testosterone, she can svelt up very nicely, very quickly, no dieting required. You pointed out the horse\'s current appearance, but the more telling sign to me is how keyed up and aggressive the horse is behaving: bucking and kicking under tack and rider, biting everyone, getting incensed by other horses, running off in 46.80, fighting when forced to run slower. Their chosing not to school is also a red flag for me, it suggests fear that doing so could make the horse go full on roid rage. Likewise, schooling by sitting a long time in the gate suggests to me a fear of him freaking out in the gate, something he\'s never shown a propensity for doing, but a horse hopped up with testerone might just.
This a horse, who had trained up to the Derby loping around in company in 1:13s, now has the other horses yelling at him. Stallions typically scream at other stallions they find threatening triggered by pheromones released by testosterone.
FWIW, the horse was also keyed up in the Preakness post parade, whereas he had been calm in the KY Derby post-parade.

Very interesting. Thanks for these insights...
- Gary Sanchez of the Yankees hit a zillion homers per at bat at the end of his rookie year two years ago, rivaling Babe Ruth, etc.
- Aaron Judge hit 59 homers last year, rivaling Babe Ruth, etc.
- Bret Gardner had a ridiculous run last year.
- Gleyber Torres has hit 10 homers very quickly this year. Ridiculous.
All of the above completely unexpected by Yankee scouts and executives.
Oh yeah: While I\'m waiting for this race...explain the success of 200 year old pitcher, Bertolo Colon? A few years ago, he visited notorious Canadian Dr. X who did surgery on Colon\'s ailing arm. A little HGH injected and whammo: new pitcher. Same with Justin Verlander of the Astros and Dr. Y, who did him in Philadelphia.
Thank you for sharing this opinion. This has crossed my mind many times. I was always amazed on how horses which were bred a notch below others could run like some of these. Not only that but also how it was reflected at the window.
Since baseballs have been flying out of the parks a record rates, it\'s hardly a yankee issue.
Part of it is the go for a homer, or strike out, mentality from hitters.

Gary Sanchez is hitting .210 this year.
Aaron Judge hit 52 (not 59) homers in a year a record number of homers were hit because the ball is juiced.
Brett Gardner hit .264 last year with 21 HR, hardly remarkable and probably below average if anything.
Gleybar Torres? Yeah, rookies never have hot streaks (Rhys Hoskins, Clay Bellinger last year).
You grasped at some straws but you missed badly. You\'ve got to have better arguments than that, right?
Phil
After the first 7 minutes, you are making accusations that hold zero water.
How does the math not hold up?
Justify did something no other horse has ever done? No horse has ever won the triple crown without racing at two? Seems like the Math May add up.
I also find it hard to believe the other super trainers Brown,Pletcher etc does not have the funds or the means in the Sport of kings to get similar results.
I am no way saying shit doesn’t happen “Juice Man†however if Baffert is that bad were is the outrage from the other trainers/owners?
I’m not blind either as Baffert’s Record in the BCC has not been hitting it out of the park latey maybe due to stricter testing.
Was Secrateriat that much of a freak in his triple crown run that all his records still hold today? Or was he helped by the Pittsburg Steelers trainers?
In order to Bring the kind of testing you are suggesting what do you think the cost would be? Maybe a 30-35% take out will pay for it? If a test result comes back dirty how does that effect the gambler who cashed his ticket?
For the majority of the owners especially in these new wave syndicates they are forming to say they do what is best for the horse I laugh.
It is always about the $$.
Your astrick analogy, I believe I read Audible went to the vet with hip issues and he did have hoof problems coming into the derby. If the ownership wants to enter a Rabbit so be it,it’s part of the sport. To not enter a horse because they don’t want to devalue there other horses breeding value well that is there choice as well.
Personally all pro sports has lost me with free agency and it has continued downwards especially the NFL. How does that relate to horse racing?
For me I enjoy getting attached to a horse and rooting for it Zenyatta,Curlin etc to retire a horse at 3 before they are even fully developed to make them a full time jizz donator well that just does wonders for the sport doesn’t it?
Horse racing is my last vise and I’m sure the same people who are putting a gun to your head to play this sport are the same people putting the gun to my head.
I wish you continued success and keep searching for that level playing field anywhere in life and when you find it let us know.
All the best
John
Only took three more years to finally get serious about, not bad .
Empathized with your comments on having to beat Justify. It was Bobby\'s two Triple Crown \"Winners\" that convinced me I couldn\'t beat Bobby if Horseracing wouldn\'t take him on.
Now, \"on its face\", it apppears Kentucky understands theres a lot at stake in the modern medical world. Kentucky appears to be trying and though they appear to have him on a second tier offense, its a righteous bust.
Kudo\'s to NYRA for following up with suspensions of their own. It\'s going to take the powers that be to enforce \"positives\" in order to modify behavior or drive the offenders out of the game. Who cares how \"successful\" they\'ve been?
Maryland?...well maybe not so much.
Trying to beat Bobby was like pulling your own teeth. Until the Bust all one could do was not let Bobby beat you. Now, with his career on the line, beating Bobby has suddenly become far less risky. However, he\'ll be back with a new angle. That\'s his gig.
