Title: Late Odds Changes
Post by: prist on May 25, 2018, 12:32:43 AM
Article at the Blood-Horse:

I\'m just absolutely amazed how the industry treats this issue. They\'re concerned about keeping the CRW players happy. Don\'t you guys think the handle would increase if [everyone] knew what odds they were getting? Unbelievable.

If they allow CRW direct access to the system as the article states they could easily lock them out 1 minute prior to the start of the race.  They could simply close the port from which wagers are transmitted.  They won\'t do it because they are greedy and want to milk every penny they can get regardless of the perception.

The thing in the article that I am curious about is the late CRW betting on a Pick-4.  I understand why they would be late on things like win bets, where they want as much odds info as possible before making their wagers, but how does that apply to the Pick-4.  Do they have access to info what Pick-4 combos have been played?  Or are they just getting implied info on the first couple of legs from looking at the win and double pools?

I am also curious how they know when to place their bets.  At a place like Gulfstream, the displayed post time is useless.  Do they have someone waiting to press a button and, if so, how long before off-time must they press it?  What happens if, after loading is complete, a horse breaks through the gate and has to be scratched?  Can they cancel?

Good questions.

There is actually no way to divine the actual payoff of a p-X, unless you can see the pools.   Yes, you can estimate, but there will be significant variance, and you can\'t bet a lot without moving the price.

I see no evidence of cancelling when  there is a  delay, other than the rare case where a horse acts up badly but isn\'t scratched.

The whole past posting thing is basically nonsense, and they get it wrong (late punches) a lot more often than is reported.

I\'m curious if anyone knows what fees these players are being charged for the [privilege] of knowing what they\'re betting on.

Why can\'t they just update the pools significantly more frequently?

Wall St went from 15mins delay before the TGJB/FNN Score days to instant.

Racing is still stuck in the stone age and in this regard it is to the benefit of a select few.

It is odd to see the P4 in the article as the multi leg win bets do not usually reflect the depth of the plunge that the win. ex, tri and super pools do.

fwiw this is in part why Derby day, Preakness day etc....are the best betting days of the year. So many tracks are open at once and so many races take place that the influence of the groups is diluted.
