Previously I remember being surprised by how many Ky Derby participants, make that triple crown participants, never raced again. Too steep a hill for some. Sometimes too valuable to race again. Maybe half went on to 4 y/o campaigns and the star players to stud. No so the 2017 alumni.
A cursory look back to 2017, remember you favorites and keys as we speculate what lays ahead for the 2018 class.
Always Dreaming - Still dreaming, I\'m not optimistic.
Lookin At Lee - Has been knocking around burning money until teaming up with alumi buddy Sonneteer for a $74 exacta in Derby Day Allowance
Battle of Midway - Last seen winning BC Dirt Mile @ 14/1, really great move by Winstar buying in before the Derby I think. Did they quietly get a piece if Instilled Regard?
Classic Empire - Crushed Always Dreaming in the Preakness but lost to Cloud Computing in the same contest - retired to stud?
Practical Joke - Had an OK summer fall following KD last seen running credibly in the Cigar Mile 12/2/17, c/b pointing at BEL like Met Mile then SAR?
Tapwrit - Won the Bel, tried the Travers, now at stud I presume.Working toward 4 y/o campaign.
Gunnevera - Still competing at the highest level. Won $1.3M in the Pegasus. minus $1M make that $300K
McCraken - Just returned to racing with a nice win --> Met Mile maybe
Gormley - Ran 4th in the Belmont then to DMR then ???
Irish War Cry - After the Wood just never could finish off a race, c/b respiratory issues
Hence - Still knocking around
Untrapped - Developed into a very capable 4 y/o
Girvin - Came back to run 2nd in the Ohio Derby and win the Haskell form tailed off from there. Started 4 y/o campaign @ Lone Star on Sat. passed all but the winner.
Patch - Ran 3rd in the Bel and 4th in WVDerby then ?? Working toward 4 y/o campaign.
J Boys Echo - BEL, GP, OP, fall, winter, spring still looking for the winner\'s circle.
Sonneteer - Broke his maiden two races after last years derby, still closing.
Fast and Accurate - After a tough Derby he\'s been making money between appearances @ TP & GP
Irap - Terrible Derby seems the one blemish on an exemplary record. Last seen chasing home West Coast\'s freak out Pennsylvania Derby effort. RIP
State of Honor - Another very competent horse who had a bad Ky. Derby last seen running 3rd in the Prince of Wales @ Ft. Erie Canada
Thunder Snow (IRE) - Lastly, the horse with the worst KY Derby short of any that died, also flopped big time in the QE II otherwise has won a small fortune and doubt if he\'s done yet.
Tapwrit and Patch have been working steady at PBD for their 2018 debuts. Patch to appear in a NW1.
RIP Irap. Almost a palindrome
