Title: Replay Expert, La Derby
Post by: Fairmount1 on April 27, 2018, 06:52:13 PM
Can someone (with more replay expertise than me) tell me what happens with Bravazo in the 2nd turn of the La Derby?  I\'ve seen the pan shot several times.  As they are in the second turn, the pan shot hides the horses for a few seconds as they are behind the trees the camera is picking up.

Before disappearing behind the trees, Bravazo is making his usual dream trip move as he often does even if he isn\'t as good as his competition.  As they emerge, Givemeamint begins to move inside of Bravazo and suddenly Bravazo is checked (sharply pulled on) by Stevens and then Gary re-engages several strides later but by then the chances are over for this colt.

Did Givemeamint come over on him?  I could not see it in the pan shot if that is what occurred but just very curious what happened. I know Bravazo has very little chance in the Derby.  But I\'m curious for my notes if others have insight into what transpired beyond the check (Why did he check?)  Maybe it is clear to others that Givemeamint came out but I just don\'t see it in that shot.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Here is the link to the pan shot if you are interested.

It is hard to tell, but supposedly that horse has difficulty cornering. If you go to about 7:10 of this video they mention it. Not sure that is the reason and as you said it is tough to see what happens behind the trees, but it does not appear that anyone got in his way. If you watch before they move into the trees, it looks like Stevens is already moving around on the horse - an indication to me that the trouble is starting at that point. However, I am terrible at these types of reviews, so if others saw it differently, I would defer to them.

After race comments, from Downey\'s site:

Gary Stevens (jockey of Bravazo, eighth):  â€œHe warmed up good, got away from there good. We were going fast and I eased into the three-path going into the first turn and all of a sudden he wanted to go straight. I didn’t make the turn, I had a steering malfunction for whatever reason. I just don’t know, but he was lugging out with me the entire trip and I had both hands on the inside rein, literally, trying to hold him in. I was breaking his momentum and he was fighting me, and I was just trying to keep him on track but wasn’t really able to accomplish that. I can’t explain why. He was sound after the race, pulled up good, but he was mad.

“I don’t know what happened, I really don’t. Maybe they’ll find some cuts in his mouth or a bad tooth or something. That’s what he acted like, like he was really fighting the bit, and it all happened at once. I’ll talk with the Coach when I’m done here and he’ll figure it out but it was very disappointing.”

Thanks guys.  Excellent info.

I noted in an earlier race that the horse appeared to run \"angry\" after a bump early in a race.  So what Gary is saying also fits what I\'ve seen when he said \"he was mad.\"
