Title: Claiming game - do records exist?
Post by: shanahan on July 05, 2017, 08:07:54 AM
On trainers as to how their ex-horses do after being claimed?  For example, if I wanted to know how Asmussen\'s horses performed after being claimed, is there an umbrella source for that?

Formulator would be an umbrella.

Redboard Room here is, I think, the best way, but it will take a little more effort.

shanahan,
Go to Equibase.com.
Do a Search for the horse in question.
This will open a page that has some tabs.
Open the Results tab.
There you will see every race the horse has run,
and under each race you will see \'chart\' which you
can open for the information you seek.
Good luck,
BH

Rich/BH - thanks for replies.  I poorly worded my quest.  What i am trying to find is a stat that might read like this (not a specific horse):

Trainer Bob Jones
12 horses claimed (fROM Jones, not BY Jones)
 1 winner next out (8%)

anyone know if this stat exists anywhere?

I tried exactly this on Formulator a couple of years ago and it seemed to work:

Find a race where Bob Jones has a horse entered.

Get Formulator for that race. (Try not to pay for it. DRF gives out samples from time to time, I believe.)

Scroll to that horse.

Click on \"Bob Jones.\"

Click on \"modify filters.\"

Click on \"first after claimed FROM.\"

Click on \"OK.\"

You should see the stats that you want--neatly summarized on top of the page, for the last five years by default, or more recent if you choose to adjust the \"time frame.\"

You will also have the option of clicking on the PPs of each horse who fits the broad category.

shanahan,
You can build your own database, here\'s how.
Again, go to Equibase.
Under Search type in the trainer\'s name.
On the page that opens scroll to Statistics by Year,
then click \'View\' in the year you choose.
All race stats will be displayed. For any claiming races open
where it says \'chart\'(like previous post)and if the
horse was claimed return to the page and open the horse\'s
name. It\'s displayed just above where it said \'chart\'.
You can now check all races after the claim and form your
opinion.
Sounds tedious but it goes quickly.
Good luck.

You\'re welcome. By the way, on Formulator, this takes 15 seconds per trainer if you miss the light.

Here are the stats for horses making their first start after being claimed away from Baffert:

Last five years:

Starters: 50

Win pct: 12%

ITM pct: 40%

ROI for $2 bet: .94

I\'ve obviously not correctly followed your directions if you got this in 15 secs.  I\'ll retry.  Thanks, Rich.  Good call on the example!

I\'m serious about the 15 seconds. But I don\'t start counting until I have downloaded the racetrack I want. It\'s more like 45 seconds from a standing start.

Be sure you are selecting \"trainer changes\" from the first menu they inflict on you after you click on \"modify filters.\" I skipped that step in my instructions the other day.

Sort of related and didn\'t want to start a new thread.

Race # 8 Bel Fri 7/7/17
Jacobson claims Brimstone from Terranova.

Brimstone had been earning regular checks vs statebred competition by going fast early and fading late more often than not in mile races.

Jacobson moves the horse to open company shortens him up and dominates the field.

Kind of an interesting trainer move. Terranova apparently had given up on a regular earner. Puts him up for sale and Jake grabs him. The fog surrounds the turnaround jump up c/b the shorter distance or oh well.

Congrats to those who saw it coming!

TAV, This trainer move happens regularly. Looking only at your contribution here, the chart and the post-claim workout pattern this one seems plenty plausible.

\"Check casher, dropping back in distance\" paraphrasing your post, melded with a very solid claiming trainer, top boy, and a definitive sprint pedigree...what\'s the rub?

BBB,

No rub, just musing.

Shanahan, as I understood him was curious about  from trainer and/or from to trainer combo\'s.

I was wondering Why didn\'t Terranova try a sprint before selling him? They do have statebred sprints.
