Title: youbet.com crash!!!
Post by: ponypro on June 07, 2004, 12:15:45 PM
I havent been able to find any press on the youbet.com system failing the hour prior to the Belmont. The system hung up on the \"confirm bet\" button  and it was impossible to tell if your bet went through. My account balance is totally off and when I have repeatedly called customer service they stated that they  are trying to come to some \"resolution\" of this massive problem. This had to affect thousands of betters and a ton of handle. Why havent I seen anything about it. What is the status of seriousplayers.net. I need a new home very soon.

Wow, this sounds like a serious problem.

Hit the serious players link to fill out a survey/application. As for the Exceller race, take a look at how \"fast\" they ran the last 6 furlongs-- nobody was coming back on anyone, they were having a lying down contest.

That\'s what usually happens after a pace like that otherwise the final figure would have been a -22. :-)

Seriously, I don\'t even know what the speed figure was for that race. I still have my Racing Form at home though so I could check what figure I gave it.  I was there that day, but I don\'t remember if there was any wind. Just that the track was a mess.

No matter, I think Slew\'s performance that day was breathtaking no matter what the final figure was. Execeller was one notch below being a champion caliber racehorse.  He  raced well off the pace, colored Slew at the quarter pole and could not put him away despite Slew\'s savage duel earlier.

If Birdstone was in that race he never would have gotten into contention.

If Eddington and RHT tried to stay with Slew on the backstretch they would have been 10 lengths behind in an all out duel just to stay that close. Slew would have been coasting to an easy victory.

At this point we are only taking those betting 5k a week or more, which may change later. If you filled out a survey and are betting more than that and haven\'t been contacted, e-mail me at jerrybrown@thorograph.com.

If I remember correctly the last 6 furlongs went in 1:18.

That sounds about right.

I think Slew had a breather after the 45+ 109+ and that\'s where Exceller made up the gap to collar him at the quarter pole. The final quarter may not have been all that bad.

I have a big bias towards the horses of the late 70s. I remember handicapping races with 7 fairly sharp multiple Grade I winners and a few up and comers all entered in the feature at Belmont. The horse that finished last beaten 15-20 was a tiger.

These days, you see horses with big speed figures jump up out of limited allowance races and get the cash.

In the old days your horse was carted off in the van if you tried that. :-)

That\'s the one problem I have with the faster horse theory. I believe they may be running faster speed figures in today\'s races, but I have a very difficult time believing they are better. The depth and quality of most Stakes fields is a lot lower these days and you can do things now you could not do back then. (other than the Breeder\'s Cup)

The network traffic just before the Belmont was probably equivalent to the \"100 year flood\" and it is not surprising that Youbet and probably every other major wagering hub had problems. I tried to make the same wager multiple times and failed (I thought) only to find out that all the wagers had actually gone through. However, Youbet has sent me a note saying they are crediting me for the full amount of the mistaken multiple wagers (8 to be exact) and they did this without any prompting on may part.

I don\'t mind the fact that they did not engineer the system for such an unexpected peak load (keeps costs down) assuming that they learn from this and re-configure accordingly. I do give them credit for handling the problem the way they did, which is about all you could expect given the situation.

I think everyone should realize that the account wagering sites are not geared for the triple crown or BC, they cannot be depended on to be up so a track or OTB is the best place.  Actually, the best place is Jerry\'s rebate site, if only they take CA players!!!!

Part of what I was implying with my \"What if Smarty is Ready but Racing Isn\'t\" post was also dedicated to this type of thing. I know these kinds of days are the exception to the rule, but who gets the shaft here, the day in day out regulars because their network cannot handle the capacity of volume. If the industry doesn\'t think Global they will never have a chance to capture it. I did hear all the Dunkin Donuts were sold so it must have been a good day.

Derby 1592,

Eight losing bets in a day for you, some kind of all-time record from what I hear.

The problem is when the system malfunctioned, they should have shut it down. Instead they tried to fix it on the fly. When the \"unable to verify\" and \"bet expired\" windows poped up sometimes the bet went thru and sometimes not. I have heard nothing from them as of today and here is their dilema.

- If I  bet 100 to win on birdstone, but because of their error it was logged 10 to 20 times my original wager and the money deducted from your account. Are you legally entitled to the winnings.

- If I bet 100 to win on Smarty Jones and it was logged 10 to 20 times and deducted from your account, Do you owe it???

I think there is probably hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake here and I still dont understand why the Bloodhorse and other online media is silent??? This is a huge story surrounding the Belmont with implications to all online wagering services.

I received a significant refund yesterday and they admitted the major screw up but you would never know it by this.
