Title: The Kentucky Derby is related to the Stanley Cup
Post by: rezlegal on April 16, 2017, 11:43:36 AM
With 20 days to go and with the help of the regulars on the Board, having pared my likely Derby  bet down to 13 horses (with a pick four bet ending with the Derby whittled down to $8,321,00)the least I could do is offer an interesting history lesson. First, why is it called the Kentucky Derby? As many of you know, it was our version of the Epsom Derby (pronounced Darby for reasons unclear to me), first run on May 4, 1780 (a Thursday)-but where did the Epsom Derby get its name? In 1779, the first English Oaks race took place. The (British) Jockey Club decided to run a similar race for colts. It was decided that the new race should be named after the 12th Earl of Derby or Sir Charles Bunbury, who was head of the Jockey Club. Legend has it that there was a coin toss--won by the Earl of Derby. That is a good thing because the name \"Kentucky Banbury\" leaves me cold. As for the connection to the Stanley Cup, The Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor general of Canada and the owner of a major stable in England. Lord Stanley was--insert drum roll- the 16th Earl of Derby. Hope this helps on the first Saturday in May!

May the Rangers drink from the 16th Earl of Derby\'s cup!

The Rangers are playing a team that has a better goaltender, better Fenwick and Corsi numbers, a better power play, and a better face-off percentage (do the Rangers ever win a face-off in their defensive zone with the game on the line?).

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Just when you thought they could not do anything more stupider, they do this, and totally redeem themselves.
Up 3-2 back to the Garden!!!

Totally different team tonight...Got nasty when they needed to... Totally outplayed the Canadians in OT...But... The power play is a disaster (0 fer)...If they start connecting on that part of their game it could be an interesting 3-4 weeks!

It is reasonable to expect a 7:55 p.m. post Saturday by Frank D. assuring us that the look in their eyes means victory At Home in game 6.

Richard,

We overcame Madamme Reno singing O\'Canada in French last night, she is their Kate Smith rolled out for the big games!!!

Hank and Price have put on some display of goal tending in this series. I hope it ends Saturday, a game 7 may be a flash back to the Broad Street Bully\'s days....

Frank

Agree 100%...If this goes back to Montreal and the refs \'let them play\' (is code for slashing/crosscheck/roughing, etc...) It WILL be a flashback to the Dave Schultz, Bob Kelly, Bobby Clark days...

It wasnt Dale Rolfs fault that Shultz put a beating on him , it was the the rest of the team just watching and not helping

They take years off of your life.

Was impressed by their conditioning level. They were flying on OT. Habs were gassed. Like the Derby, Cup tournament is wide open.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Don\'t forget Bernie \"the 3 Stooges make me happy\"Parent and the Watson brothers.
If you\'ve never seen the ESPN 30for30 on the Broad Street crew don\'t miss it next time it\'s available. Watch Slapshot in the same day and you can OD on Olde Time Hockey....

Rangers can always bring back Nick Fotiu

Nicky kept a speed bag in the locker room to keep his boxing skills sharp. They were heads and shoulders above his hockey skills.

Fotiu not hard to find. He\'s usually at some trotter track in the NY/NJ area.

Good Luck,

Fotiu was an adopted kid who grew up on Staten Island. The story is that he won a
Golden Gloves championship before he even learned how to skate.

Enough hockey. Hopefully the numbers will be passed from on high sometime today and
we can get serious. Can\'t wait to \"adjust\" some numbers to convince myself the colts
I like are unbeatable.

Saw him play with the Golden Seals early 70\'s.

And the Sharks f*ked off a win last night.

Just thought I would inject a little West Coast into the conversation.

Geezus Frank, thats the loudest I\'ve laughed in awhile. I do love hockey, anyone who doesn\'t I have to wonder about them. Its one reason why I love you guys.

BTW, the guy who assisted on the OT goal was the same guy that jammed his stick into the package of the Sharks player the game before. How he was allowed to play I\'ll never know, shoulda sat a game. He was called for a major so its not like nobody saw it. I\'ll stop before I derail this thing.

I was looking at McKracken, but waiting for the seminar and numbers.

I am enjoying the conversation tho.

Is it still possible to buy the sheets for the contenders? I didn\'t see them offered on the Buy page.
