Hey its not like the closing of the Spa means we can not enjoy some glorious, expensive horseflesh.
In the very first race of the Belmont Fall 2016 meet, there is:
(a) a 575K Tiznow purchased as a yearling;
(b) a 300K Distorted Humor 2YO purchase;
(c) a 500K Twirling Candy 2YO purchase;
(d) a 210K Super Saver purchased as a yearling.
They are all eligible to be claimed for 20K.
The interesting aspect of this is depending on the current NYRA claiming rules,
none of these once promising runners may be eligible to be claimed, as no owner
has started a runner at the meet yet. Usually having a starter at the meet is a
prerequisite to being eligible to drop a claim, but this may have changed over
the years.
A note about the Friday finale: If the recent Spring Belmont meet is any
indicator, there will be plenty of these 40K claiming maidens on the turf this
Fall; the Racing Office never had any problem filling these races and the
Panzites showed a definite preference for positioning them as the final race on
the card.
Bee,
You better make a stop at KY Downs today on your way to Belmont, some interesting stuff. T-generates start talking to their significant others if they go more than 24 hours between wagers :)
Frank:
I\'m too lazy to handicap those big fields, but Jimbo will be happy to see \"The
Leper\" back in the saddle.
Frank...just curious...regarding horse wagering and significant others...what is the statue of limitations on that pass you gave me...I figure if JB signed it might be good through the fall Belmont meet!!
John
Richie,
That first race is as good an advertisement as any for the perils of owning thoroughbreds. 1.6 million dollars worth of horse flesh amongst 4 horses, who can now be purchased for a grand total of 80k. Glennevan must be a particularly lovely animal to own, after shelling out the 575k, they didn\'t even give him 1 start at a Maiden Special race, they went right to a 50k claimer and then to a 12k seller by start 3. Ugh.
As for Frenchie\'s return, only 3 years left on the \"7-year hate\" vex I put on Frenchie for his despicable ride on Union Rags in the 2012 Kentucky Derby.

John I kind of figured a guy who was at an Off Track Wagering facility with his
best man twenty minutes before his wedding may have already earned a lifetime
pass...
Richie:
LMAO!!! To be accurate it was 45 minutes...but it was only a 25 minute ride to the church and the limo was waiting outside the Suffolk OTB...
Save your chips for a weekend in Gulfstream this winter Johnny Boy.
The Corona Beach House will be the backyard south from Fountain of Youth - Florida Derby.
Hey Jim the good news is that all of these once potential champions are eligible
to be claimed. NY Gaming Commission Rule 4038.1(a) states that an eligible
licensee who has started a runner at the \"previous or current race meet\"
can claim a horse. I will have to go for further research to see when the
\"previous\" provision was added. Important to remember that these are state
regulations, and the state has an interest (sales tax) in as many horses as
possible being claimed.
A long time ago, I want to say 1984, jockeys were on strike and Monmouth Park had
to open its meet with \"scab\" riders. The story going around the backstretch was
that there was a stone cold lock in the first race on opening day; what had
transpired was that perennial leading trainer John Forbes had convinced his
friend, racing secretary Robert Kulina, to let a race for $8,000 claimers go as
the first race on the opening day card. My memory is that the Forbes horse had
been running in Florida over the winter with 20K claimers. The edge that Kulina
had provided his friend was that although the condition book said claiming race,
it was a claiming race in name only due to the \"starter at the meet\" rule.
The Forbes horse jogged at 6/5. I do not remember anything else that happened at
the track that day after an epic night of drinking at the Bar Bombay.
Greetings
Several in the 2nd ran their 2016 tops in the Jun 30 CLM25K at Bel, which seems like a rare occurrence, especially for older horses.
not directly questioning the numbers, as that\'s the mason-dixon line of my handicapping sanity, but any comments from the figure technicians on that Jun 30th race?
cheers
I just looked at it. It\'s definitely a question, nice catch.
Previous two days were dark, it\'s the only inner turf race that day. Next day can\'t be used-- only inner route follows mid card rain (and is \"s. pace\"). So this race has to be done off the horses in it as a stand-alone. Thing is, I made the course extremely \"fast\" already to get to those figures.
I\'m going to review it again after this group runs. Could be anywhere from right to plus two.
J66--
Of course for all of our joking, the two most expensive \"duds\" ran 1-2 and the
exacta paid $125 (I didn\'t bet).
Best luck this weekend with jockeys, stewards, placekickers and referees. Eric
Donovan back making NYRA ML but today\'s Bel card rather uninspiring.
