Title: Question came up at the bar tonight?
Post by: CIRCLEOFROSES on August 10, 2016, 07:37:46 PM
Has any 2 year old made there first start of there career  after the Breeders Cup Juv, has been run and won the KY DERBY?
My question is that we always look at Dec 31 st as the last date that a horse makes its first start of its career to win the Derby?
My gut tells me its like Nov 1 st. of there 2 year old year?
appreciate your answers and opinions.

I have holes in my early data as I have information back to 1992, but the first Breeder\'s Cup was in 1984. TGJB was correct that Fusiachi Pegasus made his first start on 12/11. The only other horse that fit after 1992 is Smarty Jones who debuted on 11/9. Here are the number of horses from each month of first start that won the Kentucky Derby since 1992:

Month of First Start - Number of Kentucky Derby Winners
12 - 1
11 - 1
10 - 3
09 - 6
08 - 4
07 - 4
06 - 4
05 - 2
04 - 1 (California Chrome)

Thinking right. FuPeg had a very late debut for a Derby winner. December 11th.

Smarty also made his debut after the BC - November 9th.

So if my math is correct.
6.6 percent chance after The Breeders Cup Juv.
0 percent ofter Dec 31 st.
Attention trainers.Try running your 2 year olds rather than collecting
your day money if you want win the roses.
Thank You All
and a good night
