Title: Time for a little group therapy
Post by: rezlegal on August 08, 2016, 04:24:25 AM
We are in the heart of the Saratoga meet and the mood on this Board is sour. Time for a little intervention. First, to Jerry and Heather K- gambling, other than for those with a serious problem, is a passionate and emotional pursuit. For most on this Board it combines ego, intellect and most importantly, a form of keeping score. This is a humbling game. If most of the posters on the Board are honest, their lifetime balance as handicappers is negative. So when those who remain silent before a race, try to puff up their egos by shouting \"I had it \" after the race, it is rude, an attempt to puff up your own sense of self in a way that results (whatever the intention) in those who pour their heart and sole into this passion, getting pissed-- particularly during the prime meet of the year. Frank D - a nice guy for those who haven\'t met him - has the cahones- to post many of his plays. When Jerry and Heatherk do the same thing-- well before a race - the Board will, give them a pass if they post a winner. I also suggest we ditch the \" That\'s the way it\'s going to be\" mind set. It is hard to stay focused, not chase and make smart decisions when you feel like the gods are against you. I use movies a as metaphors-- remember the scene in Minnesota Fats where Jacki Gleason has just lost to Paul Newman- he goes and washes up, tugs at his vest and Cooley  proceeds to win. Since this board is a pleasant distraction from my compulsively looking at polling data ( you think every 15 minutes is too much?)please bring your A game to the board. Passion, thoughtfulness and ideas is far better than a rank out contest.

Hear, hear. Well said.

For those of you born after technicolor (I kid, I kid!), the equivalent is probably Ed Norton and Matt Damon getting a hot towel shave while in the midst of a 48 hour \"session.\" ;-)

\"Fat man, you shoot a great game of pool.\"

Rez, it was a pleasure meeting you at the Saturday seminar.  Well said, here.

Not a problem. I personally don\'t mind hearing legitimate after the fact explanations about why someone liked a horse that won. It\'s educational for me. It doesn\'t have to be perceived as gloating but I nderstand why it\'s a sensitive area. Losers don\'t like hearing from winners. That\'s not meant as a knock. I put myself in the former category. At least lately I do. But if there\'s any particle of handicapping wisdom that I\'ve overlooked, I\'m happy to hear about after the race, though, preferably before.

Jerry

That is about your 3rd post saying u are ok with red-boarding

How about u drop saying u are ok with something only an idiot would appreciate.

Next time somebody posts a handicapping post before a race, how about you constructively join that conversation and see if u can learn or teach something.

Saying only losers complain when winners brag is a moronic statement.  Losers brag.  Winners don\'t. Your initial premise is wrong

Jim

Did you happen to go to business school? You know how they do these things called case studies, after the fact examinations of why businesses worked or didn\'t work? It\'s the same thing here. I don\'t care if the guy won. Tell me how. I\'m good with a little extra info. There, that\'s now 4 posts.

You\'re pretty freewheeling with the insults yourself. Maybe a graduate of TU?

Tone is pretty important.

If you come to the board and say \"I did ABC things, and it led me to a winner in this race, what do you guys think? Is this repeatable? I looked through my database of old races from the redboard room, and it looks like it might work, check out races XYZ from track ABC on dates 123!\" Then I think the information mitigates the redboard and is valuable.

OTOH, if you say \"KISS MY ASS SUCKER IDIOTS WHO PAID ME OFF WHEN I WON $3242309608 ON THE OBVIOUS WINNER OF RACE 2 AT DONKEY DOWNS!!!\" Then I will not save you from the wrath that will flow.

JMO.
