Title: Preakness Day Dead Turf Rail Project – Running Total (12-0-0-4)
Post by: Molesap on June 30, 2016, 01:45:20 AM
We identified 21 horses that ran a significant portion of the time on the dead turf rail at Pimlico on Preakness Day. Of that group, more than half have come back to run with none finishing in the exacta so far. There is one entered for the 4th of July and the rest have not yet run. Some have been entered in the last few weeks and subsequently scratched.

Thanks.

Entered in his 2nd race since the Preakness Day run:
Vicky Ticky Tavie - Laurel Park - 07/02/2016 Race 8 $45,00 Claim 1 1/16 Turf

Also Tap It Out and Nimble Foot are entered in Turf races at Laurel on 07/02/2016. I didn\'t study the replays from Preakness day like you did, so I assume they are omitted from your list because they did not spend much time running on the rail.

They did not quite make the cut, but I noted both when I took notes so they were both close enough at some point to pay attention to but did not qualify.

Nimble Foot – 3w1w
Tap It Out – 2w2w

Also Copingaway and My Celeste have both run back twice now unsuccessfully. Copingaway is interesting (but not necessarily in a good way) as he has already run 13 times this year. His first run back was in 1 1/2 mile turf stakes, then he ran in 1 1/16 mile turf allowance. He is entered for July 2 in GP 10 - it is the Smile Stakes - 6f on the dirt.

We will post sheets on all the rail horses (defined as ones who got an X) in a couple more weeks.

I have followed these horses as well with the thought of catching them in their 2nd or in some cases 3rd start(if their 2nd start was too close to the dead rail effort) following the initial X(May 21st).My uncle Bob Waldo used to be the public handicapper for Suffolk Downs and Rockingham Park in their respective glory days, and one of the nuggets I picked up from uncle Bob was that when horses ran on turf course with what he referred to as a \"heavy rail\",it was incredibly taxing on the animal, and if not given the proper rest(a minimum of 8 weeks was his rule of thumb)the horse would not perform up to standard for quite some time.I\"m guessing here, but I would bet a good amount of those that have run back so far have either had one work,or no works in between starts because that dead rail effort was such a grueling effort.I believe it is well worth keeping tabs on these horses. If they show up in mid to late summer after a brief respite,I think they\'ll run to their figures as grass horses usually do.Don\'t give up on them...Thoughts?....By the way, since I very rarely post let me just mention to all you non believers when it comes to weight carried, look no further than the Poker stakes last month at Belmont for a perfect example of what a massive advantage Obviously enjoyed carrying 8 fewer lbs than the other contenders.I listened to the TVG guys say what a huge advantage lone speed was in the race, they never even mentioned the 8 lbs he received, what a joke....

Yesterday Graham Motion had a filly running second back off the dead rail and she ran a good second at 23-1.  Today Copingaway is in the Hall of Fame.  He got the \"X\" on the same day -- but he is now running his 20th or so race since late May.  Interesting horse he is.  Abrams in Southern California gives his horses bigger spacing than this horse gets.

I should have noted -- Motion\'s filly yesterday was \"Rachel Wall\" who didnt hit the wall going 11 panels.
