Title: Whats so great about Perfect Drift?
Post by: Point_Given_Gal on April 29, 2002, 12:20:42 PM
I noticed that Perfect Drift is in the Top 5 on many of the Derby Experts\' lists on the kentuckyderby.com website.

Does anyone have any insight as to why this horse might be a consideration?  I only saw him race once on TVG in the Turfway Sprial Stakes (I beleive) and he looked sharp but not better (from what I could tell) than other horses in other Derby prep races I have seen this year. Also I didn\'t think that Turfway is viewed as one of the \"major\" tracks like Aqueduct, Santa Anita, or even Gulfstream, doesn\'t it make a difference where the preps happen?

Thank you, I am still learning this great game.

Perfect Drift is not very good and you should avoid wagering on him in the derby.  ;)

Really sad news about Tempera.  Shocking...

Thank you so very much for mentioning her.  I was shocked and very very saddened to hear about what happened to her.

The beautiful girl will be missed.  May she rest in peace.

I almost don\'t want to post anything today.  Yes it is really sad news about Tempara.

Treadhead can you add more info about your opinion on Perfect Drift.  To me this horse has a great pattern based on TG numbers.  Running well last year-improving and not running too fast too early. Continued Moving forward 1st out this year with a new top again not popping a big number but moving forward steadly with each effort gradually developing moving down basically by 2 points with each start and then finally down to a 1/2 in the last.  Now with a good foundation and 6 weeks off-time enough to recover from the 1/2 and be set for a competitive go at it on derby day.  Am I overlooking something?

My thoughts exactly, but I would like to avoide steering people toward him.  It ruins the odds!  LOL

I thought so but you didn\'t let on in your post.  So if we like PD should we also like RFP.  Blue Burner is another fitting a nice gradual improving pattern-any thoughts on him? Looks to be heading for going off at a big price.

Phil, I can see where you\'re coming from but there are some big differences between RFParole and PDrift. Besides the figs, the breeding and running styles are also very different. Would say all these factors favor the latter. May have to use both somewhere anyway at the price(s). I hear you on Blue B too. My concern is that he\'s been used hard twice in a row. HP

I was hoping for some accurate information.  I was trying to ask a legitimate question.

So is he any good or not?

If so why Turfway?

If not then what are the KYDerby.com handicappers thinking?

Does anyone know anything about his breeding and what his dosage index might tell us about his stamina?

If you tell me I promise I wont tell anyone ands mess up the odds. (LOL)

Forget dosage, that stuff is garbage.  According to the BRIS stats, if you add the average winning distance for offspring of the sire and the Dam\'s sire, Perfect Drift (15.7) is the second best to Saarland (15.8).  This, plus his running style suggest the derby distance will not be a problem.

His fast figures make him very competitive and his line is good having never gone backwards.  The guys on the KYderby.com (Asher, Byrne, etc) site like him because they are all based out of KY and have seen him run and train in person this winter a lot more than they have seen the other contenders.  Makes no difference if a figure is run at Turfway, Gulfstream, or Beulah Park (yeah Beulah Twins!), a fast figure is a fast figure....

Excellent explanation, thank you very much.

I appreciate your explanation of the distinction regarding where a horse races/wins be it Turfway or Santa Anita its good to know that if its a fast time thats all that matters.

I know that Saarland is a sore subject on many of the boards but I feel that his best is yet to come.  I dont think that I will be leaving him off of my exotic tickets.

Ok - I\'ll just keep these bits of info (regarding PD) to myself.

Thanks again!

Best of luck on Derby Day to everyone.

Agreed. I think RFP has run as good as he\'s gonna get. If anything he\'ll regress and I don\'t need to make a win wager on him Saturday cause I have him in pool 3 of the futures along w Perfect Drift, Castle & my top choice EOD.  Hope whatever infection Tempara had won\'t affect the other two Godolphin runners in the barn. It happens, You get one sick horse in the barn and it can spread to other nearby horses.  What a loss.
